Looking Back OCTOBER 1?3? By VIRGINIA WHITE TRANSEAU MORE INDUSTRY IS TOWN'S BEST INPROVE MENT HOPE: Of ten peo ple, suddenly stopped on Church Street and asked the simple question, "What would you like to see done toward improving Hert ford," three entertained the same trend of thought, leaning toward more in dustry and more payrolls as the greatest improve ment that possible came to Hertford. Here is what the Institute of Church Street Opinion discloses when the mind of the man in the street turns toward a better hometown in which to live: C.R. Holmes, attorney ? "I would like to see a first class combination stock and produce market in the city of Hertford; a place for all farmers in this section to come and sell their pro ducts. " Mrs. V. A. Machman, insurance agent ? "I would like to see more industry, more legitimate employment and increased payrolls." J.E. Newby, postal clerk ? "I'd like to see the public library here in Hertford second to none in the section. Every com munity needs a good library, especially for reference. The local library commission is working now along that line." Beverly Tucker, insurance agent ? "Nothing under the sun would improve Hertford more than a greater source of employment. I'd like to see more industry." Fred Chalk, WPA Supervisor ? Several streets in Hertford are much too narrow for present-day traffic prob lems. I'd like to see Grubb Street widened to ac commodate through truck traffic. to relieve the load of traffic on Dobb Street and through the business sec tion. I'd like to see a White Way through the business section, and Church Street widened in the business district." L.W. Anderson, county Agent ? "Most of all I'd like to see some means of recreation provided in Hertford, especially for the children here they can enjoy super vised recreation." T.R. Ainsley, school principal ? "The widening of Church Street in the business district. It's much to nar row now when cars park there." W.T. Elliott, salesman ? "Decidely, I'd like to see some more enter tainment in Hertford. Anything in the town that will make for larger payrolls. F.N. Jessup, cot ton ginner ? I'd like to see a nice attractive bathing beach constructed some where on the riverfront; a place to take visitors swim ming when they remark on the beauties of the river." DANCE AT WALKER'S: Miss Blanche Everett, Miss Ruth Davenport, Miss Gladys Hamrick, Miss Mary Towe and Walter Ed wards enter* ined at a dance Friday evening at Walker's Ballroom.
