Taking A Look Back NOVEMBER 1*39 By VIRGINIA WHITE TRANSEAU OWNERSHIP OF THE WEEKLY CHANGED WITH THIS ISSUE: With this issue of The Perquimans Weekly, the newspaper established here in 1934 has been bought and taken under management by Max Campbell, formerly of Indiana, and now of Hertford. The transaction which removed the ownership of the Hertford paper from the hands of the Chowan Herald Publishing Co. of Edenton and placed it in charge of local ownership was consumated last Saturday and the new owner took over the newspaper im mediately. While a native of Indiana, Mr. Campbell is still not a stranger in Hertford, in the county, or in the state. He has taken over the active ownership and management of The Weekly and will be assisted by his brother, Joe Campbell. PROFITS BY RUNNING PIGS THROUGH PEANUT FIELDS; BUT NOT HOGS: Clarence Chappell of Belvidere has discovered that it pays to turn pigs into peanut fields, but not hogs. Mr. Chappell sold 27 head of hogs last spring at the age of five months and seventeen days. They averaged 206 pounds each. These pigs were run through peanut fields until they weighed 90 pounds, ac cording to L.W. Anderson, county farm agent, and then taken off peanuts and fed balanced ration of corn, green feed and supplement. Mr. Chappell says that he never allows hogs to run through peanut fields and that he hasn't has any soft hogs in several years. By feeding in peanuts until they weigh 90 pounds or so and then feeding the ration mentioned above for the remainder of the weight, they killed hard and there was no soft and oily meat. Mr. Chap pell has about 200 hogs on his place now. Police Dept. Reports ARRESTS Charles D. White of 315 Stokes Drive, Hertford was arrested Tuesday night, Oct. 25, at 11:45 p.m. and charged with breaking and entering and larceny of the Bank of North Carolina, N.A. located at the Harris Shopping Center. Chief Marshall Merritt stated that he received a call from the dispatcher at approx. 11:15 p.m. that night reporting a breaking and entering at the Little S&R Store. Merritt said that when he arrived at the store, Officer Greg Har rington reported that he had found the back door of the S&R broken in and the store's 500-pound safe lay ing upside down in the alley behind the store. Merritt said that while he and Patrolman J.R. Logan were investigating this inci dent, the dispatcher called and reported a silent alarm at the bank. Chief Merritt stated that he immediately dispatched officers Har rington and Logan to the scene and arrived there himself shortly after the alarm. Merritt said that when he arrived, Logan and Harrington already had the suspect in custody." Officers Logan and Har rington reported that when they arrived at the bank they found the glass in the front door had been broken to gain entry. Logan said that "Harrington covered me while I crawled through the opening to check in side." Perquimans County Citizens Vote "NO" On The Nov 8 SCHOOL BOND REFERENDUM We Believe The Bond Issue Should NOT Be Approved HERE ARE SOME GOOD REASONS FOR VOTING "NO" 1 . The proposed bond issue does NOT have the endorsement of the Perquimans County Board of Commissioners. The board is deeply interested in the problems of education in the county and, over the years, has supported the annual school board budgets. 2. The plan for new buildings, renovation and repairs is much too "grandiose" and costly for a small county with de clining population and school enrollment. 3. The proposed bond issue would provide $1 ,800,000. Inter est costs for the 20 year period would amount to $1,200,000. 4. To pay for the $3,000,000 "Package," county taxes would increase 21%. " N 5. During the 20 year re-payment period there will surely be other increases in the tax rate for other county needs. The result could be a truly alarming tax rate, particularly for a county with a very limited number of tax payers. 6. The county has on hand $1,000,000 that can be used for school buildings, renovation and repairs. 7. The school board and superintendent should scale down their plans to fit the $1 ,000,000 already available. 8. A vote against the bond issue is NOT a vote against ed- S ucotion; it IS a vote against a 20 year debt to pay for un needed buildings and remodeling costs. Let's pay as we go
