Letters To The Editor ft* The Editor: Recently I attended a meeting in one of our neighboring tovna' achool, and I waa amazed at the beautiful and modern classrooms, and facilities. Are we willing to keep our children, grandchildren or our friends' children from having less than the best we can give them. We need to modernise aa well aa expand our school buildings. . In li27, when I graduated from Perquimans High School, the buildings were fairly new. Over the years there has been an increasing in the number of students which re quires more room. The achool buildings are in need of Improvements Our children, grandchildren, and our friends' children deserve the best possible school facilities we can give them. I want to commend the Board of Education and the Coun ty Commissioners for their careful study of all the possible methods of bringing about the needed improvements to bring our achoolf up to date. May wf count on you to come to the polls and vote FOR the Bond Referendum on Nov. 8. MRS. ROXANNA C. JACKSON , Rt. 4, Box 10 ' Hertford, N.C. 27944 To The Editor: We can not relive yeaterday. We have to live for today and anticipate the future. We feel that this is what each ?itisen that votes yes for the School Bond on Nov. 8 will be doing. We know that higher taxes are one of the big arguments against the isaue, but how many citizens are against the new offices and equipment purchased to update our county (governmental, protection and bookkeeping systems. Why be against updating our schools? We stand a good chance of our taxes being raised for more welfare if we do not try to do all we can to educate our children so they can make a de cent life for themselves. Please let's give a lot of thought to everything connected with this issue before we make up our minds and .if we ha^e questions contact Mr. Harrell or someone on the board who can give us first hand information. FEKTON JR. AND MARGIE EURE Rt.!3, Box 496 Hertford, N.C. 27944 To The Editor: V e don't want to increase taxes, but it is inevitable a bui ding will have to be built sooner or later. We had rather support a $1,85 million bond referendum now, than to pay doi ble later on. "Think About It." ] etter facilities are needed for better programs, to at tra :t new people and industry, to provide more jobs for pe pie and to cut down on welfare. ] our forefathers hadn't had the foresight to build the pri sent building, many of us would not have had the chance to ttend a good school. < ur children today are our citizens of tomorrow so lets Vc e YES and prepare them. Dt .BON AND ANNE YOUNG 51 Pennsylvania Ave. Hertford, N.C. 27944 he Editor: le Youth of Perquimans County need our help. It has n sai<J many times that the youth of today will be the cipzens and leaders of tomorrow. Although this is very le, the quality of leaders that our county, state and nation have in the future will depend on a great deal on the istont that we make today: A positive vote in favor of the bond referendum on Nov. 8 is one of the ways ill wfcich we Jiaye an opportunity to shape the future of our ciunty. In wfaiatbetter way can we help to build a more pro g essive county then by providing the best possible educa ti n for the students of today and tomorrow. We encourage all the citizens of Perquimans to Vote " TES" on Nov. 8 for the Perquimans Coutny School Bond. Box 87 Hertford, N.C. 27944 To The Editor: Just two weeks ago Perquimans County High School celebrated its annual homecoming week. Students had the opportunity to participate in many activities that brought the school spirit to a peak. All of these festivities were well organised and enjoyed by both the faculty and the students. P.C.H.S. hss quite a few clubs. The Biology Club, the VICA Club, the Health Careers Club, the Art, Club and the Beta Club, just to nsme a few. Student participation in these clubs is large in quantity and high inquallty. For this we are proud. The Student Council of P.C.H.S. speaks for itself. From sponsoring gifts and food for the needy at Christmas to planning the entire homecoming week, the Student Council has long had a good reputation. Many students at P.C.H.S. participate in various athletic programs. Baseball, football, softball, and track are some of these programs. An in recent years many of these teams, both male and female, both Varsity and Junior Var sity, have celebrated conference title wins. Sad to say, P.C.H.S. does not have a school band. However, the Perquimans County Marching unit brings pride to the school everytime they take the field. Even though they are separated from the school, all of the par ticipants in the unit come from P.C.H.S. The long hours of work, planning, and practice are taken on by the students involved and their advisor. They are invited year after year to various parades and football games. Again and again they not only bring pride to our county but also to our school. The school newspaper, "Propinquity," ?nd the school an nual, "The Galleon" not only bring the students up to date on the events of the year but also are permanent records for the memories of the high school years. Again, Student participation proves to be the driving force that make both of these publications successful. All of the above were not just listed to praise the students of P.C.H.S. for their efforts but also to let residents of Per quimans County know that the majority of the students who attend P.C.H.S. DO CARE, DO TAKE PRIDE IN WHAT WE DO, AND DO SUPPORT THE SCHOOL BOND REFERENDUM. ALL of the above were listed also to show that can be done in some inadequate facilities. Just think what could be done in modern and better facilities. f Yes, the students at P.C.H.S. are proud. But it'p up to you, the voters of Perquimans County to give us something we can really be proud of ? a new school. Please, VOTE YES! WARRANTY Lassiter's Appliance Sales & Service Harrig Shopping Center HERTFORD, N.C. / PHONI 424-5*4 To The Editor: We were very glad to read the responses of so many peo ple la last week's paper concerning the school bond issue. Most of all we were relieved to know that there are people who are really "Concerned Cltixens" concerned for the future of my children and others like them, attending public school and not just concerned for cost, taxes or self interest. We would also like to praise many of the teachers in our system for the job they are doing, sometimes under the worst of circumstances. No system public or private is perfect but we are very sure ours is working to better itself in many ways and voting for the bond is one way we can all do our part to help. We should never categorise students or teachers as all bad or good. Surely each of you, regardless of when you were in school, remembers a bad teacher or unruly students. Our system today and tomorrow can be no better than the citizens of Perquimans demand and help it be. We were both attending the old Hertford Grammar School the day it burned to the ground. The memory of that cold day and the fear of the fire is still very real to us. We only lost coats and personal objects that day, we were all lucky, what if there is a next time? The story may not end so well. A YES vote from us may head off any such prob lem in the future. ED AND BARBARA NIXON Rt. 1, Box 996 Hertford, N.C. 27944 WE CLEAN AND REPAIR RADIATORS.
