At great distance, you can discern the shape of a bird and identify it - you can differentiate an elm leaf from a maple or an oak. And color - the pleasure of the mayrid shades of color, everchang ing hues in the landscape, the sky, a flower garden. In the gift of sight alone, there is so much to be thankful for. Luke 22:24-27 It seems that the desire for greatness is inherent in prac tically every human spirit. Even the school boy's heart throbs with enthusiasm when he reads the injunction of Homer's hero to his son: "Always to be the best and superior to all others." Christ did not say that it was wrong to wish to be great. The truly great are those who do what God wants them to do. While Christ was manifesting His love in a very special manner, His disciples were demonstrating their unlikeness to Him by their strife as to which of them should be ac counted the greatest. Christ was grieved deeply by the quarreling of the disciples. They should have been display ing unselfish love for one another. Throughout His earthly life Christ refused to allow regard for Himself to stand in the way of the manifestation of His love. Christ taught His followers that in His kingdom ambition must always be for service. In the kingdoms of this world greatness has consisted of lording it over others. Many have measured greatness by the number of slaves or ser vants that a man owned, but Christ taught that greatness is determined by the number of people one can serve. Mark 9:33-37 Because of the selfish ambitions of the disciples, they entered into a heated dispute as to which of them would have the place of preeminence in the kingdom of the Messiah. They were anxious to know which one of them would be advanced to this position of trust and honor. Christ asked them what they had been arguing about, but they did not have anything to say. Theirs was the silence of shame. Christians should never cherish an ambition which has its goal in themselves, or of which they shall be ashamed in Christ's presence. He used a little child as an example for all. A little child does not try to be great. Christ taught the disciples that they should entertain modest opinion of themselves, and drop all their contentions about primacy. A great person is one who has the characteristics of a little child ? trustfullness, dependence, teachableness, and humility. The great man is the one who recognizes himself as being utterly dependent upon God in every moment, cir cumstance, trial, and responsibility of life. Sincere followers of Christ rejoice in the privilege of serving their fellowmen in whatever capacity they find it possible to do so. Out of hearts of love let us serve our Lord and help our fellowmen to the very best of our ability. -Obituary?
