WHY SERVE GOD? 1
Job 1:1-3. Ml; 1:44, MO
Job'i Character
Job wai a man of aincerity and conaiatency. He waa
faithful to God. Job waa not sinleaa, and never pretended to
be, but he feared God, did that which waa right, and turned
away from evil. God bleaaed Job with a Urge, happy
family, aa well aa with great richea, consisting principally
of great flocka and herds of liveatock, of which he had come
into possession honestly.
Satan'a Challenge
God praised Job saying, "There is none like him in the
earth." Satan challenged God's atatement, accused Job of
being good and serving God merely because of aelf
interest, and contended that if Job's possessions were
removed that he would curse God. In response to Satan's
accuaation, God gave the Adversary permission to test Job
in any manner which he desired except the taking of his
life.
Job's Calamities
Satan did not lose any time in using God's permissive will
in allowing the testing of Job. All of Job's property was
swept away. In one day the richest man in the East became
bankrupt. That in itself would have driven many into
despair. Then, all ten of Job's children were killed in a ter
rible storm. Job responded: "The Lord gave, and the Lord
hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord." What a
timely and helpful lesson for those who have become
resentful and bitter because they have lost a loved one!
Then Job was smitten with tortuous and loathsome boils
from his head to his feet. This caused Job to lose his posi
tion. The "greatest man in the East" was compelled to sit
"among the ashes," scraping the terrible sores on his poor
body. Surely, the account of Job's extreme ease ?n
recorded that all who are called to pass through extreme
conditions may know that God is able to deliver from ex
treme afflictions.
Perhaps the hardest blow of all Job suffered was when
his wife failed him, urged him to give up his faith in God,
and to commit suicide. God pity the person who is hindered
in religious life by some member of his immediate family
who is being influenced by Satan, or who has to stumble
over some relative in his effort to be loyal to God.
Job's Comment
Even though Job was baffled as to why he had to suffer,
he realised his afflications were due to the permissive will
of God. Job reprimanded his wife for her sinful sugges
tions, maintained his remarkable confidence in God, and
concluded beyond doubt that God had some good purpose in
permitting him to suffer. Fully aware that his blessings
outnumbered his adversities, Job remained submissive,
loyal, and true to God.
Conclusion
From the example of this man of tremendous faith we
learn that it's more important that we have the right at
titude toward our afflications and adversities than it is to
know the reason for them. Instead of adopting the attitude
of self-pity or resentment, when we have these unpleasant
experiences, let us resort to earnest prayer, Christlike
resignation, and complete dedication to greater usefulness
in the Lord's service because of them .
