Besides taking an exam and participating in the awards ceremony, visiting students will have lunch together and take a brief tour of the ECU campus. Easter Seal program The Easter Seal Society of North Carolina ii organising a volunteer pro gram to provide baby sitting or companions for handicapped children and adults. Volunteers must be at least it years old and should have an interest in people with special needs. Volunteers will receive training by Easter Seal staff on how to properly care for handicapped in dividuals. Anyone in terested in becoming aa Easter Seal volunteer, should call Karen Mc Combe at 3M-2167, Ext 4t. An application will be sent to you. If you have a family member needing a specially trained sitter or companion, please call Mrs. McCombe at the same number. She will be glad to explain the program in more detail, and send you an application. Baseball program is discussed The officers and Board of Directors ol the Per quimans Count/ Youth League met Monday night in the Municipal Building. Presiding wws President Allen Winslow. The first item of busi ness was the summer baseball program. Discus sion was centered around the present program, and its relationship with the new Recreation Dept. in the county. The theme of the discussion was fine of cooperation between the two organisations in order to involve as many youth in the summer baseball pro grams as possible. After the discussion the Board of Directors voted unanimous ly to continue the Little League (ages 9-12) pro gram, and eliminate the Pony League (ages 11-14) program. A similar pro gram will be offered by the babe Ruth Program, which came under the Recreation Dept. directed by Billy Wooten. More spedfic in formation for boys aged 13. 14, and 15 will be published after the Babe Ruth League meeting. Election of officers for this year was the next Item of business. The new of ficers are: Gil Underwood. President; Ben Thach, Vice-President; and Ethel Chappell, Secretary. Allen Wlnslow was thanked for the fine Job he did as president. The next meeting will be on Monday night March 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Recrea tion Building on Grubb St. This meeting is for all directors and coaches. Nixon takes 2nd in corn yield National Corn Growers Association recently an nounced the North Carolina state winners in the 1977 twenty-five acre National Corn Yield Contest. First place in the Class AA Non-Irrigated Division went to Charles Brown, Brown Farms, Inc., Moyock, with a yield of 179.06 bushels per acre. Ned Nixon Jr. of Hertford placed second in the state in the same division with 175.56 bushels per acre. Third place in the Non Irrigated Division when to Ray and Mike Rogerson, Elisabeth City, with a yield of 167.75 bushels per acre. The National Corn Growers Association's competition is the only non-commercial nation wide corn yield contest re quiring the largest field size of 25 acres. The contest has been conducted for 13 years. Over 1,200 corn producers from 44 states competed for the top national trophies and awards. The 1977 con test had 29 entries in the Irrigated Contest, seven en tries in the Class AA Non Irrigated Divison and one in the Class A Non Irrigated Division with over 200 bushels per acre. Trophies and awards will be presented this summer at the National Com Growers Association awards meeting. Contractors meet The Northeastern North Carolina Electrical Con tractors Association held their Feburary meeting at the Knobbs Creek Parks and Recreation Center with 17 members and two guests present. There was an invocation, a roll call, reading and ap proval of the minutes, correspondence and treasurer's reports. Guests Howard Pritchard and Glen Edwards were in troduced and welcomed. A discussion followed concerning scheduled programs. A period was set aside for unfinished buisness and new business. A discussion followed concerning the April 4-5 meeting of the North Institute held annually in Raleigh. There was also a discussion of the association as a whole join ing the North Carolina Association of Electrical Contractors. The meeting adjourned for a 15-minute break. Jimmy Harrell discussed a few questions on the 197S code changes. President Owens began a thorough discussion of the code changes using the 1978 code book for detailed answers. Truck pull set The Gates County Jaycees will sponsor a truck pulling contest on Saturday, March 11. The contest will be held at Roger Lane Farm Supply in Gates and will be held from 10 a.m. until oompleted. All four wheel truck Faculty game Members of the Per quimans County School faculty will take members of the Elisabeth City Junior High faculty in a basketball game Friday, March 10 at Perquimans County High School. Players for Perquimans will be Sid Eley, Henry Felton, Tony Lewis, Billy . Stallings, Gary Stubbins, Bill Tice. Joe Winslow, Celvin Webster and Roland Wright. Although the beys came oat on the short end of the score, some very valuable experience was gained by them. A good crowd followed the boys to the game also, which Is always great The Midget boys' season is now over and was very suc cessful. Thanks to all who helped in any way. With baaeball Just around the corner, prospective players should be throwing and running in order to be ready for the season. Babe Ruth Baseball for ages 13, 14 and IS will have an organisational meeting the first part of April with practice starting then for those bojrs not iovolved is the school program. A Prop League for D-year old boys is be ing considered which would start placing in May. More information on this will ho published next week. For the Senior Babe Ruth boys, ages lg, 17. and II. an organisational meeting will be held in April with practice for those not on a school tesm beginning then. Play will start when the high school season ends. Plans are for Plymouth and Manteo to play in our older league this year which will make it very exciting. Adult basketball standings are updated The following is an up date of lait week'* results in adult basketball play sponsored by the Perquimans County Rec reation and Parks Department. The Independents defeated the Hornets 103-C7. High scorers for the win ners were K. Rouse with 19 and G. Stubbins with 16. G. McClenney shot 20 and J. White had 18 for the Hornets. Pioneer Seed edged out the Golddiggers in a 57-52 game. R. Lassiter led the victors with 21 while D. Matthew* had 25 for the losers. Woodard'f took a win over the Warhawka, 6M4. C. Rogers had II and B. Stalling* shot 14 for the win ning team. R. Easton led the Warhawks with 13 points. A victory, 5240, was en joyed by the 7t'ers over the All-Sta All-Stars. C.
