the paper this week, and for the next three
weeks is an opportunity for you to help the
Recreation Dept. name the park that will
soon be under construction on
Grubb St. Rules of the contest are printed

Very soon the plans for the summer pro
grams for everyone will appear in the
paper. Programs for everyone will be the
theme of the summer activities. Plan now

Golddiggers downed the
Warhawks 49-41. H. Thaeh
led the Golddiggers with 19
points. L. Eason led The
Warhawks with 12.
In other play the In
dependents were victorious

Winslow had 20 for the win
ners and B. Stallings led the
losers with 14.
Community Gas took 66-53
win over the 76'ers. M. Hill
had 27 for Community Gas
and H. Jackson shot 19 for
the 76'ers .
The Independents took a
win over the Hornets by a
wide margin, 105-62.
Leading scores for that
game were K. Felton with 28
for the Independetns and J.
White with 19 for the
Hornets.
Pioneer Seen edged a win
over the Golddiggers this
week with a score of 35-31.
Leading scorers were T.'
NoweU with 11 for Pioneer
Seed and R. Murray with 10
for the Goiddiggers.
Woodards won over thr
War hawks by a score o.
52-38 with B. Stallings
leading the scoring for
Woodards with 16 points and
R. Eason with IS for the
Warhawks.
The 76'ers edged past the
All-Stars with a score of
55-51. Leading in the scoring
was H. Jackson with 22 for
the 76'ers and T. Parker
with 25 for the All-Stars.
Communtiy Gas won over
the Warhawks this week
with a score of 72-65. L.
White scored 18 for Com
muntiy Gas and K. Welch
scored 22 for the Warhawks.
The Independents won by
a commanding lead over
Pioneer Seed 104-57. G.
Rouse led in scoring for the
Independents with 22 points
and T. Nowell for Pioneer
Seed with 21 pdints.

MAKING KITES ? The Kite making class, sponsored by
the Perquimans Recreation and Parks Department, was a
big success, according to Recreation Director, Billy
Wooten. About 40 children attended and all were successful
in making ankite. Rev. Charles Bullard was the instructor,
and amased the children with his knowledge of kites.
Assisting him were John Laveszo, BUI Tice, and Bullard's
children, Mike and Robin. Wooten says that the success of
this event will pave the way for other similar events. Pic

Contest begins to
name the park

tion and Parts Department
would like you to help name
the water-based recreation
park, that will soon be under
construction on Grubb St.
The only requirement is that
you be a resident of Per
quimans County. There is no
entry blank, which appears
below. Deadline for entries
is Friday, April 21 at 5 p.m.
A committee will then pick a
name for the park and
award a prise to the winner.

turned Into the Recreation
Department on Grubb St. or
at the Town office in the
Municipal Building.

Victory begins
Pirate season
The Per qui man High
Pirates started the season
right with a 20-1 victory over
Gumberry , last Friday.
Gumberry's only run came
in the first inning. Marvin
Hooter started the second
inning for Perquimans with
a walk and then stole second
with one oi&i.Tosh Towe
then came up and singled
scoring Hunter. Next came
batter Scott Williams, who
walked sending Towe to
second. Lloyd Evans
reached base on an error,
and Jerry White came to bat
and singled, scofing Towe
and Williams. Coming to bat
next was Howard Williams
who singled scoring Evans,
and Cary Hunter then batted
and walked, loading the
bases. A wild pitch was
thrown and J. White scored.
Marvin Hunter then came to
bat for the second time that
inning and hit a three-run
homer over the fence at
about 375 feet, scoring H.
Willimas, G. Hunter and
himself. At the end of the
second inning the score was
8-1, favor of Perquimans.
In the third inning Evans
came to bat and reaefaed
base on a walk. Russell
Lassiter then doubled with
one out. H. Williams came to
bat and singled, scoring
Evans and Lassiter, with
two outs. M. Hunter was
next and gained a walk and
Mark Winslow singled scor
ing H. Williams. Next in line
was T. Towe, who doubled
scoring M. Hunter and
Winslow. Phil Woodell
doubled and scored Towe.
Evans then singled and
scored Wwodell, and Tim
Perry doubled scoring
Evans. Up next was J. White
who doubled scoring Perry
and a throwing error moved
White to third. An error by
Gumberry's shortstop on a
sharp grounder* by G.
Hunter scored White from
third. At the end of three
innings the score was 1S-1.
In the fourth inning with
two outs, M. Winslow and
Towe were on base by walks
and then scored on passed
balls by the catcher. At the
end of 4, the score was 20
tol.
y G. Hunter and P. Woodell
were the pitchers for the
game and together pitched a
3 hitter. Hunter pitched two
innings with six strike-outs,
one hit, and one walk.
Woodell pitched three inn
ings with 5 strike-outs, two
hits and one walk. Next
week's games include a
game at Murfreesboro, on
Friday, April 7, and Per
quimans will host North
ampton on Tuesday, April
11.
Lady Pirates
take a win
The girls' Softball team it
Perquimans County High
School enjoyed a win last
week in an 18-5 game over
Gumberry.
Played at home, the game
represented the first entry
in the win column for the
Lady Pirates who now have
a 1-1 record with their
earlier loss to Chowan.
The following were the
hits for the girls: Mary
Wood Hurdle, Donna Dail,
