EXTEND LIFE OF CLOTHING
With clothing costs continuing to escalate at a runaway
pace, consumers need ways to extend the life of their
clothing. Good care that keeps clothing fresh and new look
ing is of most importance to long-lasting clothes. Although a
few stains are impossible to remove, many will come out if
treated promptly and correctly.
Prompt attention is the most critical factor in successful
stain removal. Attend to a spill as soon as it occurs. Remove
any excess stain before it has time to penetrate the fabric. If
the staining material is a liquid, use a clean white blotter to
absorb the excess. Or lift off excess non-liquid stains with a
dull edge (table knife, letter opener, paper shears).
If the proper solvent is handy and immediate attention to
the stain is possible, follow the appropriate procedure.
When nothing else is possible, sponging with clear water
will help.
Working with a stain while it's fresh and still wet general
ly will prevent it from becoming "set."
Always work with a stain from the center to the outer
edges of the stain. Move the blotter as it begins to absorb so
the stain will not be redeposited.
The following items are suggested to have on hand for
equipping the Home Stain Removal Kit: rubbing alcohol,
household ammonia, chemically pure amyl acetate,
cholorine and oxygen bleach, coconut oil or mineral oil, col
or remover, enzyme fortified detergent or pre-soak pro
duct, glycerine, three percent solution hydrogen peroride,
all-purpose liquid household cleaner, liquid household
detergent, color mouthwash, white petroleum jelly, pre
wash soil and stain remover, soap, tri chloroethane, steam
distilled turpentine, and white vinegar.
A frequent summer time problem may be a grass stain.
The following procedure is recommended: (1) enzyme pre
soaks may effectively remove grass stains. If stain persists,
bleach with three percent solution of hydrogen peroxide.
Rinse and launder using bleach appropriate for tne fabric.
(2) Work detergent into the stain. Launder, using bleach ap
propriate for tne fabric. If stain persists, sponge with rub
bing alcohol (one part alcohol, two parts water on acetate
and colored fabrics) and then rinse.
Another frequent problem eomes from ballpoint ink pens.
Sponge stain with rubbing alcohol or pre-wash soil and stain
remover until bleeding stops. Or srpay with aerosal hair
spray until wet-looking. Work detergent into stain. Rinse.
Repeat if necessary. Launder using bleach appropriate for
the fabric.
For more information concerning stain removal techni
ques and procedures, contact the Home Economics Exten
sion Agent.

Would you go on
protein diet?
Just how safe are protein
dieu? My belief is that
when u'.ii correctly, they're
as safe as other diets. But
here's the rub. People often
do not follow directions.
Instead of supplementing
protein formulas adequate
ly with vitamins, minerals
and foods, plus receiving
medical supervision, dieters
sometimes use protein by it
self and eventually deplete
their body's potassium tar
si, the mineral which con
trols heartbeat.
Protein diets (powdered,
or liquid) can be effective as
an aid to losing weight. Just
use correctly. I'll be fcappy
to counsel with you in
further detail in the
pharmacy.
