Many did so, received salvation from Christ, and went on their way rejoicing. The Controversy ? Acts 15:1-2 Where the gospel has been preached men have either pro posed a substitute for it or they have sought to change it. To Antioch, where Paul and Barnabas had preached salvation by grace through faith in Christ, certain teachers had come from Judea and started a controversy. They bluntly denied the sufficiency of faith in Christ for salvation. Very em phatically they declared that male Gentile believers in Christ could not be saved unless they observed the Mosaic law by submitting to circumcision. In their contention that grace must be supplemented by works, they earnestly and boldly taught error as if it were truth. Their agitation caused confusion and a great controversy over the question, can Christ save or does salvation come through Christ plus something else? And this controversy has never ended. Paul and Barnabas refuted the false teachings of these unnamed teachers. The thing that aroused the apostles was not the mere observance of the rite of circumcision itself, but their attempt to make it a condition of salvation. But these teachers could not be persuaded to give up the per micious and erroneous teaching they were propagating. It was decided that the wise thing to do was to go to Jerusalem and consult with the apostles and elders about this impor tant matter. They wanted this question settled once and for all, for the sake of the Christian movement. The church at Antioch selected Paul, Barnabas and Titus (Galatians 2:1), and Derhaps others, for this mission The Conference When the conference was convened formally in Jerusalem, the problem at Antioch was presented to the apostles, elders, and leaders with the hope of obtaining a ruling on the question of whether salvation was all of grace, or partly of grace and partly of works. After many had ex pressed their opinions, Peter delivered an extended discourse consisting of a statement of facts and an appeal. He made it clear that neither Jews nor Gentiles are saved by grace through faith plus works. Peter dealt the critics a severe blow with his masterful statement. It also brought silence within the crowd. The verdict of the council was that it was not necessary to keep the Mosaic law in order to be saved. Since both Jews and Gentiles are saved by grace through faith and not by works, there was no justification for the Jews attempting to require the Gentiles to be cir cumcised as a condition of salvation, The Conclusion ? Acts 15 : 22-31 James, the half-brother of our Lord and the president of the council, summarized what had been said, and concluded his address with a statement that the Jews and Gentiles are saved on exactly the same terms, by grace through faith in Christ. James suggested that a letter should be written set ting forth instructions for the proper guidance of both the Jewish and the Gentile elements in the church, and that it be carried to the brethren in Antioch. The Council wisely arranged to send their own represen tatives to Antioch bearing the written instructions, in order that there might not be any question as to the convictions and decisions of the apostles and elders. The communica tion, which was drafted under the immediate direction of James, was taken by Judas (surnamed Barsabas) and Silas, who were leaders in the church, stating the conclusion at which the Council had arrived. When the members of the church at Antioch received the epistle which the brethren in Jerusalem sent to them, and they heard the reaffirmation of the truth that justification is by grace through faith plus nothing, they rejoiced greatly because of the consolation which that message brought to them. Naturally, they were interested in publishing the correct conclusion for the con solation of all others who might be concerned. They were anxiousHo share the good news with others who needed it as had been the case with them. +++ The Sunday School Lesson is sent in by Gear Creek Bap tist School in Pineville, Ky.
