Local students arq among Albemarle Academy graduates v, At recent graduation ex ercises held at Albemarle Academy, some 500 guests and 24 seniors heard the addressed of James R. Sugg, attorney at law and former Democratic State Chairman, and Ray S. Jones. Jr., former educator and present insurance representative. . While Sugg spoke on the theme, "What Are You Do ing With My World" and the responsibilities each Sraduate must assume, ones, using a less formal, more humorous dialogue, emphasized the choices ' facing the graduates in his speech, T'Graduation, ^What Now." Further, the assembled guests heard Valedictorian Laurie White and Salutatorian * Eva Smithson speak about ; their associations with the ? Academy. Both White and ^Smithson were among the award winners during the I ceremony: White received t the Academy's Excellence ] in Science Studies Award while Smithson won the ' Excellence in Foreign . Language Studies Award and the Michael Dean Heath Citizenship Memorial Award. Among the other award winners were Peggy Burgess (yearbook award), Gaye Morgan (Excellence in Art Award), Mark Turner (Ex cellence in Athletics Award), Carol Spencer (Excellence in Women's Athletics), Vickie Godfrey (Excellence in English Studies Award), Lou Anne Forbes (Excellence in Mathematics Studies). Seniors Clay Manos, Eva Smithson, Wrenn Trotman and Mark Turner were fur ther recognized for their particular contributions to the Academy program. Manos was awarded the David Preston Godfrey Jr. Memorial Sportsmanship Trophy for ''exemplifying the qualities of sportsman ship, industry and athletic participation." Smithson was her "devotion to school, family, church and community. The Amber Lanette Lane Memorial Spirit Award was presented to Miss Trotman who exhibited "exemplary spirit and energetic behavior" in stimulating the Academy program. Finally, Turner was awarded the Faculty Cooperation Award for his "continual acceptance of even the most menial of tasks, tasks which often were time-consuming and burdensome, but tasks which were necessary for the smooth operation of the Academy program." Recognized for their election to both the Society of Distinguished American High School Students and Who's Who of American High School Students were Christopher Baker, Vickie Godfrey, Eva Smithson, Wrenn Trotman and Laurie White. At the close of the even ing's ceremonies, Calvin Chappell, President of the Albemarle Education Foundation, Inc., confer red diplomas on the follow ing graduates and noted their educational plans: Christopher Michael Baker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Baker of Belvidere ( UNC Greensboro); Wayne Mathews Banks, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Howard T. Herman United Methodist Church and Hall's Creek United Methodist Church, spoke to the graduates concerning their Christian duty as graduates. 4-H field day is successful The Hertford Sr. 4-H Club defeated Pools Grove-Chapanoke 4-H Club in a Softball game June 17 ' as part of 4-H Field Day - Activities. The Hertford tteam had 19 points to Pools 'Grove-Chapanoke's 11. Approximately 300 peo ple attended and par ticipated in the field day events. The program featured special music by "The > Raw Expedition Band" in ' Eluding Rufus Keith Rouse, Clayton Gilliam and Mike Jennings. The participants Camp was held June 13-14, The theme for the two- included boys and girls THAT'S A BIG BERRY - Mrs. T.R. Harrell displays what can only be described as a big berry. The strawberry, the largest found in the business' 20 years of operation, weighed one-fourth of a pound.
