Albemarle team is edged out The Greenville 14-15 year old All-Stars captured the Area G Babe Ruth 14-15 championship last Satur day night with a 194 whip ping of Windsor. Green ville reached the finals by edging the Albemarle All Stars 10-7 on Thursday night. The local team defeated Windsor 7-5. After their defeat by Greenville, the Albemarle team lost to Windsor 5-2. The local team was coached by Ralph Jordan, Johnnie Winslow, and Tony Jordan. Recreation Happenings By BILLY WOOTCN The Girls' Softbtll will viad up this week. An All-Star team will be picked from the Hert ford 10-12 year old teams. This team has been selected to play at Ashevilie in the State Girls' Tournament. The 13-15 year old Hertford team will also jo to Ashevilie to compete in the State Tournament. The Albemarle 16-year old AO-Stars will play in the State Tournament next week. Local play for the league continues Monday through Thursdsy nights at the Union School. The arts and crafts classes are going real welL All are welcome to come by the office and see some of the children's wort. The summer is half over, and all the recrea tion programs hare gone real welL Participa tion has been high, and the people involved have had a good time. We appreciate all the support the programs have received. See ya next week. Local All-Stars on to Greenville The Albemarle 16 year old All-Stars will compete in the State Babe Ruth 16 year old Tournament in Greenville next week. The team will leave Monday July 24, with the tourna ment beginning on Tues day, July 25. There will be eight teams competing in the double elimination event, with the winner go ing on to the Southeastern Regional in Havelock the next week. The local team will play an Asheville area team at 6 p.m., Tuesday afternoon at Guy Smith Stadium on Highway 13 in Greenville. The team is coached by Bryant Woodell and Mar vin Hunter. Billy Wooten is District 28 Babe Ruth Director. Rodney Lassiter named Chowan Athletic Director J. Rodney Lassiter of Belvidere has been selected new Athletic Director at Chowan Academy for the coming school year, according to Murray Tynch Jr., Chair man of at the Chowan Academy Board of Directors. Lassiter will be responsi ble for the entire athletic program at the Academy including varsity athletics as well as the helath and physical education pro gram. "It's certainly a great challenge with tremendous respon sibilities", said Lassiter about his new position. He is a 1976 graduate of Elizabeth City State University where he ma jored in health and physical education. He graduated from Per* quimans County High School in 1972. Kained out game scheduled The game between the Albemarle Area American Legion baseball team and the Albemarle League of yesteryear was rained out Saturday. The game instead will be played Sunday, July 23 at 3:30 p.m. at Hicks Field in Edenton. There will be a $1 admis sion fee for those 12 years of age and older. The games will be played on the fields at Per* quimans Union and Per quimans High School. This is a 16-team tourna ment with an enter tee of 140 per team. Aat in cludes two Dudley non restricted flight balls per team. Teams wishing to participate will be ac cepted on a first come, first serve basis. A team will be considered official ly entered when the entry fee has been received. Additional information can be obtained by con- . tacting Billy Stallings, Richard Copland, Kelvin Roberson or Archie Miller. >' Take Area G title The Pitt County Babe Ruth All-Stars won the Area G 16-18 Babe Ruth Championship last Satur day with a 6-2 victory over Bertie County. The Pitt team defeated Pamlico County and Dare County Bertie eliminated the local Albemarle All-Stars and Dare County on Friday night to reach the finals. The local Albemarle league, which hotted the tournament in Edenton, wishes to thank all the local fans for their support Good crowds were on hand for all the hallgames, and with the good weather, the tournament was a success.
