When he came home from the Navy after World War II, a lot of young people were hanging around the street corners in Roanoke Rapids with nothing to do. So, Jesse went to work. He and several other veterans, all members of the Jaycee chapter that Jesse helped start, hit on the idea of a baseball team for the town. They were still nailing up grandstands while the pitchers warmed Up for the first game... but, Roanoke Rapids now had a baseball diamond instead of street corners . for its young people.
