Barrel race One of the contenders in last week's October Horse Show circles the barrel and heads for home. Tigers fall short, 12-6 The Perquimans Union Tigers played what their coach termed their best half of football this season last Wednesday, but the trouble was it came too late. Columbia held on against a strong second half rally and defeated the Tigers 12-6. Columbia scored first after a blocked punt turned the ball over to them on the Tiger one yard line. The play was set up by a game opening boot that sent the pigskin all the way down to the Tiger three yard line. The second score came after another Tiger mistake, a fumbled punt that led to a touchdown and resulted into a 12-0 halftime lead for Columbia. The second half, though, was a different ballgame for the Tigers, despite the ab sence of starting Quarterback Teton Reid, who was shaken up during the first half. Babe Ruth winners Three area teenagers have won top honors in a baseball skills competition and three others received runner-up awards in a program co sponsored by the Albemarle Babe Ruth League and French's Mustard Company of Rochester, New York. The competition was supervised by Billy Wooten of the Albemarle Babe Ruth League. The participants, divided into three age groups, mat ched skills in base running, fungo hitting, and throwing accuracy. Winners were determined by averaging contestants' scores over three events. The winners in the 13 year old class were Emmett Winslow, winner; and Tommy Tilley, runner-up. Jay Gregory received the first place award among the fifteen year olds and Terry Lightfoot was the runner-up. The top award winners will receive plaques for their achievements. This program, intended to upgrade baseball skills in a spirit of friendly competition among teenagers of the same age group, is conducted on a nationwide basis by Babe Ruth Baseball and French's Mustard Company. All participants will receive recognition certificates. Jaycee shoot slated The Quail Hunter's Open, sponsored by the Perquimans County Jaycees will be held November 10th and 11th. "The defense came aliye and stopped them cold in the second half," he said. "We had the best half of football we ever had." Perquimans Union's sole touchdown came on a three yard pass from Vincent Foster to end James Walker. Walker tacked on 47 yards of fancy footwork to make for a SO yard pass play. Still, it wasn't enough as Columbia held on to a 12-6 victory. Defensively, Eley said solid contributions came from lineman Paul Merritt, tackle Danny Gray, and halfback Jimmy Flight. The offense was led by Vincent Foster at halfback and quarterback, Jimmy Skinner at end, and Eric Boyce, who played well at both center and defensive linebacker. Oct. 24, the Tigers will take on Elizabeth City in their homecoming and final game of the season. The game will be played under the lights at Perquimans High School with pregame activities beginning at 6:55. irate defense ; crunches Columbia A sticky defense combined with a 70 yard touchdown pass to give the Perquimans Pirates an 1-7 victory over Columbia Friday night, evening their conference record at 1-1. The Pirate touchdown came early in the second half on a 70 yard pass play from quar terback Phil Woodell to Bobby Tolson. Fullback Ponald Felton rammed over the two point conversion to give the Pirates a slim one point vic tory margin. Columbia scored first on a 50 yard drive capped off by a one yard touchdown run by Chip Hunnings. Hunnings kicked the extra point to give the Rams a 7-0 halftime lead. The touchdown wasn't enough, though, as the Pirate defense fought back a fierce Ram surge near the end of the game to seal the victory. Two blocked field goals and an interception by Tolson snuffed three separate Ram , drives, all in the last five minute8ofthegame. Donald Felton lead the rushing attack for the Pirates with 52 yards on 12 carries. Woodell was l-of-8 passing, but Pirate eoach CelJ Webster said that four of I passes were dropped. The win brought the Pira record to 2-4 on the The team will travel Murfreesboro for the Mu freesboro homecoming oq Friday night. ?
