County roundball roundup
Union splits pair
The Perquimans Union
Tigers split a pair of games in
Junior High basketball action
last week, while the Union
girls' team was defeated in
both its games.
The Tigers downed Manteo
in an away game last Monday,
37-14. Scoring leaders were
Milton Stepney with 14 and
Rodney Gordon with 13. The
Manteo Girls' team, however,
defeated Union 16-15 in a
closely fought game. Anne
Foreman scored 7 and Francis
Kotel 4 in the loss.
On Thursday, however, the
Tiger boys lost a home game
to Roper, 41-31. Tiger coach
Billy Stallings said the game
was tight until Milton Stepney
fouled out with more than four
minutes to play. "The Tiger
squad lacks both depth and
height," he said, "and it
showed agaist Roper."
Rodney Gordon led Tiger
scorers with 16 points,
followed by Stepney with 8 and
Teton Reid with 7.
The girls were dominated by
Roper, 47-17. No individual
scoring was available for the
game as of press time.
The games brought the
Tiger boys' record to 4-3 on the
season and the girls' record to
14.
Both teams entertain
Manteo in their last home
games of the season today
(Thursday) at Union Gym.
The girls' game gets un
derway at 3:30 and the boys at
approximately 4: 30 p.m.
Both teams play their final
games on Monday in Edenton.
Junior League
Statistics for the Junior
League team, sponsored by
the Perquimans County Parks
and Recreation Department,
show the team averaging 42
points a game, while giving up
43 a game. The team's two
leading scorers are Jim Un
derwood at 16 points per game
and Richard Thach with a 14
points per game average. The
team shoots 62 percent from
the free throw line and sports
a 1 and 2 record.
In the Midget League,
several players have good
averages. They are:
Rodney Lyons, Nuggets 13.5
Melvin Jennings, Royals 12.0
Johnny Gallop, Nuggets 10.0
Johnny Jackson, Bucks 9.4
Doug White, Royals 9.4
Pop Miller, Royals 9.3
The leading points per game
average belongs to the Royals,
who are scoring 34 points a
game. The leagues best
defense is why the Bucks are
coming on strong. They are
giving up only an average of 22
points a game.
Midget action
In Midget Basketball
action last weekend, the
Nuggets created a three way
tie for first place with a
thrilling 37-36 win over the
previously unbeaten Royals.
They, along with the Bucks,
are all tied for first place
with 3-1 conference records.
SCORES
The Bucks won 31 to 11
over the Devils with Kenny
Nixon the high scorer for
the Bucks with IS points and

Devils with a score of 39 to
26. Doug White was the lead
scorer for the Royals with 12

Library news
Starting with this week, the
library staff will answer
questions on any subject that
Perquimans County residents
are curious about. We have
received several interesting
queries already.
Q: I have read that the
ancient Chinese used tiger
whiskers in some form of
torture. Is this true and if so,
how can whiskers be painful?
A: Tiger whiskers can be
very uncomfortable if cut into
tiny pieces and eaten. The
Chinese would sprinkle the
whiskers, which were almost
invisible, in the food of their
enemies. This resulted in days
of pain, but was rarely fatal.
Q: How did the term
"slapstick" comedy
originate?
A: In the early days of
slapstick comedy, the actors
often used a paddle designed
to produce a loud whacking
sound. The paddle, or slap
stick, lent its name to the type
of comedy.
We are sorry that because of
limited space, we cannot
