Pirate J ay vees champs again ? The Perquimans High School Ji]ttn Basketball Team roared to their second straight conference title after thumping both Gum berry and Currituck in tournament action this weekend for a spotless conference 11-0 mark (15-1 overall). In te tournament opener Thursday night, Perquimans completely dominated Gum berry, 15-21. "The team just looked super quick," commented coacji Pete Hunter following the Impressive victory. Perquimans jumped out to a 22-5 first quarter lead that set the scene for the rest of the contest. Gum berry scored on one point in the entire fourth quarter. Troy Jackson came one point shy of the Gumberry team total, capturing Pirate scoring honors with 28 points. Robert Mallory contributed 16 points to the cause, Nate Carson added 12, Donnie Parker 12, Melvin Coston 11, Craig Perry 10, James Rid dick 4, and George Barnett 2 to round out the Pirate effort. In the championship game, although playing with an in jury hobbled Robert Mallory, the Pirates still managed to defeat Currituck by a handy margin. 74-63. Hunter said his teams of fensive attack was slowed a little because of the underpar Mallory, who fell and injured his right ankle in the Gum berry game. This time, Jacluon poured in 32 points, and grabbed It rebounds in a tremendous individual performance. Parker added 18 points and 5 rebounds, Mallory had 8 points, Carson scored 7 points and snatched off 8 rebounds, as did Riddick. Craig Perry scored only one point but blocked five shots, and Melvin Coston added a point. Hunter said he has been pleased with the togetherness and team play of his squad during the entire season, and especially during the tour nament. "This tream had more team effort and more fight than any team I have ever coached," he said. "The young men had a lot of character on and off the floor." 5'10" freshman Jackson averaged more than It points per game for the Pirates during the season, followed by sophomore Mallory who scored at just under 14 points per game. County students attend contest Karen Butt, a Perquimans High School student, received third place in the Accounting I division of the Future Business Leaders if America District I contest held recently inAhoskie. Ms. Butt is now eligible to participate in the state level contest to be held in Winston Salem in March. Other Perquimans High students attending the event were Yvonne Byrum, Nona Cooper, Dee Hurdle, and Joy Meads. The students were accompanied by Ms. Joann W. Stallings, FBLA adviser. Sixteen active FBLA chapters were represented in the eleven competitive events. According to Ms. Stallings, these events provide members and advisers an opportunity to exchange ideas for the promotion and growth of FBLA. The 22 member PHS chapter consists of those students preparing for careers in business. The club offers a supplement to classroom training by providing students an opportunity to lead and participate in group discussions, preside at meetings and conferences, enter competitive events, and develop confidence in their own abilities. Among activites Perquimans High FBLA members have participated in are: attendance in district and state leadership conferences, donation of blood through the Red Cross, the compilation of a FBLA scrapbook, and several fund-raising projects. Academy St. Local musician gets Who's Who honor The 1979-80 edition of WHO'S WHO IN MUSIC will list a Perquimans County High School student who has been selected as being among the country's most outstanding high school music students. David Lee Ziemba, head of the school's nominating committee, and the editors of the annual directory included the name of David Allen Stevenson of Hertford because of his music ability, academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and future potential. The Perquimans County Parks and Recreation Department is considering having volleyball for girls and women in March and early April. Coaches are needed for the girls teams, which will include ages 10 through 14, and womens teams, with a roster of at least 10, are needed to make up a league. The Bucks, coached by Horace Reid, won the Perquimans County Parks and Recreation Department's Midget Basketball Title Saturday morning, beating the Devils for their seventh league win. They finished one game over the Royals. Team members were: Johnny Jackson, Burke Perry, Chad Nixon, Sean Jackson, Kenny Nixon, Arvin Johnson, Tim White and Dwayne Johnson. A strong defensive effort and consistent shooting kept Perquimans ahead of a tough Currituck squad in the early goings, but a spread offense and a stiffened defense turned the tables on the Pirates in the second half. George Jackson and Mike Holley contributed 12 points each for the Pirates. Currituck avenged an earlier loss to Gumberry to take the conference title on Saturday night. Tigers end on bright note The Perquimans Union Tigers defeated Manteo last Tuesday, 32-28, to finish up their season with an even overall mark at 5-5. Rodney Gordon and Nor man Mallory had 10 points each in the loss, and Milton Stepney added 6. Coach Billy Stallings labeled the season a good one for the Tigers. "With a bounce here and a bounce there we could have been 8-2," he said. The Tiger girls also ended the season on a winning note, defeating Manteo, 23-11. Vanessa Whedbee scored 12 points and Nadine Johnson added 5 for the Lady Tigers. Their final record was 2-8.
