Perquimans Gardening ?y Jean Wlnslow Keep old tulip and daffodil blossoms removed from bulbs, and cover plant with annuals. If you wish, lift the bulbs after blooming with a clump of dirt and plant in a trench until they go dormant. Before heavy seeding and vine growth begins, repair and paint fences and lattices. Birdbouses should be cleaned out, but do not paint them now; birds do not like the smell of fresh paint. The color, though, doesn't seem to matter. Thin out seedlings in coldframes so they will have enough room to develop. Put a handful of lime around clematis vines, and fertilize lightly. In this area, fescue grass is the most popular variety. However, in eastern North Carolina, centipede is highly adaptable. It does not require as much fertilizer as other grasses, but no amount of chemical will make its natural yellow-green color any greener. It requires less mowing? a distinct ad vantage. It is a sod-forming grass, a creeping grass that will spread faster than other types. That's the good news. The main drawback is that cen tipede forms a loose turf that is not wear- resistant. State horticulturists suggest you consider the "busy-ness" of an area before planting. Centipede is seeded or sprigged in May, June, or July, and must be kept moist. After it starts growing, apply a high nitrogen fertilizer. Then the next April apply 3-9 19 fertilizer. Mow when the grass is two inches high.
