ASCS update
by THOMAS RIDDICK
Crop disaster program
Several producers have
already filed applications for
low yield credit because of
yield losses on corn due to the
drought conditions we have
had in the county. Producers
are reminded of the disaster
program and the possibility of
earning payments when there
is a loss.
On farms that the yield falls
below 60 percent of the
estalished farm yield, farmers
may qualify for payment to
compensate for some of the
loss. Each farm stands on its
own in determining eligiility
and payments. Production
must be kept separate and
turned in to us on each farm
for which application is filed.
This can be weight tickets or
sales receipts identified with
the farm number or name and
showing the mositure reading,
producers name, and date.
If the grain is stored, call us
and we will measure the
quantity in the bin. Level the
grain in the bin, and should we
not be able to get to your farm
immediately when called,
mark the depth of the grain on
the bin for us to get our
measurement.
Applications must be filed
within 15 days of harvest
completion on the farm.

Farm Bureau
advisors to meet
Over 150 members of Farm
Bureau commodity advisory
committees from throughout
North Carolina will meet in
Raleigh, Sept. 5, to begin the
organization's "policy
development process".
Donald Madre, president of
the Perquimans County Farm
Bureau, said representatives
in nine commodity areas will
meet for the purpose of pin
pointing some of the issues
and problems that farmers
will be facing in farm com
modities during 1981 and
future years.
Representing the
Perquimans County Farm
Bureau at the meeting will be
Ed Nixon, peanut committee;
Billy Williams, field crops;
and Tommy Harrell, hor
ticulture.
Madre said that aften issues
are raised and discussed by
commodity committees, they
are submitted to the in
dividual county Farm
Bureaus for consideration by
resolutions committees prior
to the county annual meetings.
Madre pointed out that the
Raleigh meeting will begin at
10 a.m. with a report on the
current agricultural situation
and general problem areas
that will be confronting
agriculture in the future.
Committees will later begin
their individual discussions.
Madre suggested that Farm
Bureau members bring ideas
or questions to the attnetion of
local committee members.
"This policy development
process assures Farm Bureau
members that the
organization at county, state,
and national levels will work
for those objectives which
members themselves have
initiated and decided," he
said..

Soil test measures nematodes
Soil-borne nematodes may
be robbing your garden of part
of its potential yield at fruit
and vegetables. A soil assay
can help determine if you have
this problem and how serious
it is.
Nematodes are round
worms that can't be seen
without the aid of a
microscope. Some of them
cause large swelling on the
roots of some vegetables and
farm crops. These swellings
are easily seen if you pull up a
plant and view the roots.
North Carolina Agricultural
Extension Serice specialists
explain that other nematodes
cause injury but don't cause
root knot. Therefore, the best
way to determine if you have
nematodes in your garden soil
is to take a soil samnle and
have it assayed.
The assay by the North
Carolina Department of
Agriculture will cost you only
$1 per sample. You probably
wouldn't want to submit more
than one sample from a
normal fiie garden. "?
This composite sample can 1
be taken by collecting small -
amounts of soil from several
locations in the garden, -
mixing it thoroughly and
taking about a quart of the soil
for the assey. -
The soil to be assayed
should be put into a plastic bag
and kept cool. Forms to -
submit information are *
available from the county -
agricultural extension office.
