"This oew system will help eliminate the traditionally long lines at license plate offices and allow us to provide more efficient service to the state's motoring public." Motor Vehilceo Commiasiooer. T? Md ? ?> The Perquimans County Sheriff's Department, in conjunction with other area law enforcement agencies, arrested two men May 4 in connection with the Feb. 16 incident at HoUowell Oil Com pany involving the theft of two company trucks and 2,000 gallons of fuel oil. William T. Griffin, X, of South Mills, and Elijah Williams. 43, of Elisabeth City, were arrested after a some 3-month investigation involving sheriff's departments from Perquimans, Pasquotank, Gates, and Camden Counties, as veil as the SBI and the FBI. Griffin was charged with breaking and entering, larceny of a motor vehicle, larceny of oil, conspiracy to commit larceny of oil and conspiracy to commit larceny of a motor vehicle. He was placed in Albemarle District Jail under a $100,000 bond. William* *u charged with breaking and entering and alio with conspiracy U0 commit larceny of a motor vehicle and conspiracy to commit larceny of oil. He was placed in Albemarle District Jail under an $10,000 bond. The probable cause hearing is set for May 27. According to the sheriff's department, the two men face similar charges in surrounding counties. Firemen ? (Continued from page 1) Firemen who display flashing lights when responding to a fire alarm are not excluded from the law if they have an accident or endanger someone. Most importantly, Swanson stressed the need for caution and safety con sciousness when responding to a fire alarm. "Don't stick your neck out too far and get it loped off," he said. "If you don't get there you haven't helped anybody." Swanson noted that a fire truck is ex tremely heavy, and difficult to stop. "When you do get it wound up it's sort of like a train engine. You cant get it stopped too easy," Swanson said. Several items of business were on the agenda, and the association dispensed with them before Swanson took the floor. On a motion by Hertford fire chief Charlie Skinner, the association decided to seek the color coding of fire hydrants in the 10 county region. Many counties in the region have constructed their own water systems, Skinner said, and all of them utilise fire hydrant-type flushing valves that can provide varying amounts of pressure. Fire departments need to know how much pressure each produces so that they know what hydrants can be used for. Departments will approach town and county governmental units about color coding the hydrants. In another matter, the association accepted two new memtas; Scranton Volunteer Fire Department, and Perquimans County's Durants Nech* Volunteer Fire Department The recently organized Durants Neck VFD hopes to be settled in a new building in the community of New Hope sometime during the summer. Armed forces day set for Saturday The Elizabeth City Coast Guard will sponsor an Armed Forces Day celebration on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public is invited and there is no admission charge for the special event, which will be held at the Elizabeth City Air Station. Music will be provided by the Nor? theastern High School band and con cessions will be sold. Bateman. Raymond Dean, 1 lot (.31 Bateman, William E? 5 ae?
