But much to the relief of local law enforcement officers, Francis Patrick Jones, 20, of Route 2. Hertford, decided to turn himself in to the police department early Thursday morning. Jones, who was under warrant for arrest because of an alleged April 9 larceny of a motor vehicle, was arrested in downtown Hertford nty sheriff Julian Broughton and later turned over to deputy sheriff Joe Lothian, who in turn, lost Jooes en routet Jones en route to the car. Lothian said the pruooer was not handcuffed. "I sure didn't think be was going to run on me in downtown Hert ford," he said. But run he did. Lothian said he took off down Front Street in pursuit of the escapee, and followed him into the King Street district, where he was joined in the search by Hertford Police Chief Marshall Merritt and Broughton. After combisearching the swamp, Lothian and Broughton took to the S shaped bridge, where they checked cars leaving Hertford until around 3:30p.m. After the two suspended the search, they went to speak with Jooes' family. Although Jones turned himself in Thursday, he is charged with the delay, and obstruction of an officer in per-; form an ce of duty, in addition to the larceny of a vehicle charge. He is presently held under a *00 bond in the Albemarle District Jail. His probable /? cause hearing is set for May 27. Construction program hit by theft Perquimans County High School's new construction program was dealt a severe set-back last Monday when tools valued at some $2,000 were stolen in a break-in. According to Hertford Police Chief Marshall Merritt, thieves entered an unlocked window in the construction workshop sometime late Sunday night or early Monday morning. Items stolen included a versa plane kit, valued at |288, a router kit valued at $305, a circular saw valued at $149.65, a motorized miter saw valued at $209, as well as other miscellaneous construction tools. i Merritt said that a garbage can full of new tools was left behind and that finger prints were lifted from those tools. He said the department has suspects in mind and will continue its investigation jf the incident. PCHS principal William Byrum agreed that the tool theft was a severe blow to he construction program. "It hurts a lot," he said. Byrum said there are no funds ivailable at present to replace the equipment and that no decision has been -eached on whether or not it will be -eplaced. In another police matter, 22 pints of issorted liquor and 110 cans of beer were White is charged with arson A Perquimans County Grand Jury returned a true bill of indictment against former county resident Bud Waylon White in connection with a Belvidere house burning on Oct. 26.
