Eight Hertford volunteers have been
named to receive the Governor's 1981
Volunteer Awards. The award winners,
nominated by the community at large
and selected by a committee of area
leaders, were announced this week by
Mayor Bill Cox.
Scheduled to receive awards this fall at
a reception and ceremony in Raleigh are
Annice Peckham, Human Service; Lloyd
(Pete) Riddick, Volunteer Community
Leader; William A. (Billy) White, Ad
ministrator-Coordinator of Volunteers;
Hazel Dee Hurdle, Youth Volunteer;
Mrs. Thelma Riddick, Senior Citizen
Volunteer; and Peggy Layden of
Belvidere, Disabled Person Volunteer.
Receiving organizational awards are,
Charles Woodard of Woodard's Phar
macy, Business-Industry Volunteer
Involvement and Captain Ralph Barr of
Perquimans County Rescue Squad,
Community Volunteer Organisation.
"We had other deserving
nominations," Mayor Cox said. "The
committee felt it was a difficult job,
making the final selection in each
category. There was no vote taken. All
decisions were by consensus of the
group."
There were no nominations for the
Church-Religious Volunteer category,
the mayor reported. "Of all categories
we had, I certainly thought we would
have a religious group nominated," he
said.
Serving on the committee, coordinated
by Mayor Cox, were Pat Harrell, school
superintendent; Wayne Ashley, Bank of
North Carolina; Paul Smith of the far
ming community; and Juanita Bailey,
home economist with the agriculturl
extension agency.
Annice Peckham was selected for the
Human Service award because of her
dedication to the Rescue Squad. "She
doesn't hesitate to pull duty, day or night
when she is needed," the
nomination read.
Pete Riddick, recipient of the Com
munity Volunteer Leader award, was
nominated because "he has assisted with
and coordinated numerous worthwhile
fund raising suppers for civic, school,
fraternal, charitable and other
organizations. He has served faithfully in
the Hertford Fire Department, the
Perquimans County Rescue Squad, the
American Legion and other
organizations."
Billy White was named for the Ad
ministrator-Coordinator Volunteer
award for a long list of accomplishments,
including service as founding chairman
of the Band Boosters, raising 130,000 for
band uniforms, Little League team
director, charter member and present
drum major, Hertford Fife and Drum
Corps; life member, Hertford and county
Jaycees, volunteer fireman 30 years, 1981
Fireman of the Year and leadership in
the United Methodist Church.
As a youth volunteer, Hazel Dee
Hurdle was reported actively involved
for many years, always willing to help
and always doing more than needed. She
has served as coach of the girls softball
team, organizing and coordinating
tournaments. She works closely with the
Hertford recreation department and has
been active in the Perquimans Jaycettes,
where she is the youngest member and
the youngest director.
For the Senior Citizen Award, Mrs.
Thelma Wilson was nominated as a
dedicated school volunteer. She began in
1976 in a third grade classroom at
Perquimans Central School in Winfall,
working one day each week, reading
stories and poems to the children,
assisting with special projects, field trips
and special children. She shared her
experience as a registered nurse. For the
past two years she has worked at Hert
ford Grammar School, assisting with one
child in particular. Mrs. Wilson is
moving to New Mexico to be near her
daughter and grandchildren.
Peggy Layden, recipient of the
Disabled Person Volunteer Award, is a
member of the Perquimans Jaycettes,
serves as a volunteer in the schools, and
helps local clubs to raise money. She is
an inspiration to all the residents of the
county because of her efforts. Though
she is very limited in the services she can
offer, she never lets her handicap keep
her from doing for others.
The Perquimans County Rescue Squad
was named for the Community Volunteer
Organization award for its services to the
community by supplying emergency
medical services throughout the county.
Woodard's Pharmacy received the
Business-Industry Volunteer Award for
financial support of the Babe Ruth
Baseball teams, the men's volleyball,
women's Softball, men's basketball and
men's Softball teams. Contributions to
recreation, recreational facilities and
charities were noted. Without sponsors
such as Woodard's Pharmacy, it was
noted.small counties like Perquimans
would have even less leisure time ac
tivities.

Running a profitable farm isn't a gam
ble when you have Perdue's Increased
New House Guarantee.
With Perdue's increased new House Guar
antee, you'll earn a minimum of $2,944.00
per flock for the first six years of operation.
With 5.5 flocks per year, that's a guaran
teed gross annual income of $16,192.00 per
house. And with profit and production bo
nuses available, many growers earn more.
That means no matter what the weather, or
what the market, you've got a good depend
able income that can only get better.
But your birds aren't the only money
makers. The total cost of your new house
alone will earn you a 10% investment tax
credit from the U.S. government. So if your
Perdue house cost $70,000.00, you could
recover $7,000.00. That means after you
have filed for the 10% tax credit, the actual
Woodard
cost of your new house could come down to
$63,000.00.
Another benefit from your flocks is the fer
tilizer they produce. Each time your house ,
is cleaned out, you'll have up to 80 tons of ,
valuable litter. Based on the current value
of nitrogen, phosphate and potash, these
80 tons of litter are worth about $2,000.00.
Finally, the consumption of broilers in
creases more rapidly each year than any
other livestock. In fact, since 1976 the per
capita consumption of broilers has in
creased 19%, and is expected to continue
to increase an additional 21% by 1984. So a
Perdue grower is cashing in on a business
that's not only going great now, but will con
tinue to get more profitable as time goes on.
