Arrest made in
Hertford break-in

arrested a local ui Monday for
breaking and entering. and two other
men last week tor aasuait.
Police arrested Elwood White. M, of
31? Stakes Drive and charged him
with two Marts of breaking awl en
tering and one count of trespassing.
White was arrested Monday in the
house at MS Stokes Drive, following a
call from the resident of the home,
who had been oat at the time at the
break in.
There he was arrested for breaking
into the house and for breaking in and
trespassing on November 31 On both
occasions White allegedly broke the
window in the back atora door. ae
Nothing had been stolen an either
occasion. Police added that they
believe the break iaa were a result at a
domestic arguement between White
and the resideat of the house
White was reieaaed on $S00 bond
and will appear in court for a pretrial
hearing December 2
Police alao arrested Daniel Cooper,
40, of 3M King Street Thursday of last
week, charging him with assault on a
female. Police say he allegedly
assaulted his wife, Shirley. He was
reieaaed on promise to appear in
court.
Winslow re-elected
as RIHA chairman
RALEIGH ? The Roanoke bland
Historical Association has elected
four new officers and seven new
members of the board of directors.
Mrs. J. Emmett Winslow of Hert
ford was re-elected chairman of the
board. John P. Kennedy, Jr. is the
new vice-chairman.
Mayor John F. Wilson IV of Manteo
is serving his first term as secretary,
and W. Ray White of Nags Head and
Manteo is the new treasurer.
Chauncey S. Meekins, long-time
treasurer of the Association, was
elected treasurer emeritus.
New board members elected were:
Jack L. Adams, Kill Devil Hills; Mrs.
Britt Armfield, Greensboro; mayor
Donald W. Bryan, Nags Head; Ed
ward L. Greene, Manteo; Mrs. Robert
G. Hayes, Concord; Louis Midgette,

Washington, D.C.
Re-elected to the board were Mrs.
Hugh Q. Alexander, Kannapolis; John
E. Blizzard. Chapel Hill; Frank A.

The new officers and board
members were elected here Tuesday,
November 17 at the annual board and
membership meeting and luncheon.
The meeting is held each year in
connection with Culture Week.
The Association heard reports from
Chairman Winslow, and General
Manager-Associate Producer Robert
Knowles.
Knowles presented the board and
members with a 12-page written
report. "I think there are many things
in this report that will be of interest to
you," he told the group. "But the
bottom line U that The Roanoke
Island Historical Association is in
good fiscal condition."
Mrs. Win slow reported to the
Association that work was continuing
in "pursuing our dream of the
Roanoke Island Center for the Arts as
a brick and mortar memorial for
America's Four Hundredth An
niversary of the Roanoke Voyages."
She noted that such a center would
serve not only the various needs of
"The Lost Colony" production, but of
the entire Albemarle area.
During the luncheon meeting, Rep.
Evans, co-chairman along with his
wife Becky of the 1982 RIHA mem
bership drive, presented the plan for
the upcoming campaign. The drive
will use a new program in which area
chairmen will work closely with
county chairmen.
Mrs. L.Y. Ballentine, last year's
membership chairman, spoke briefly
on last year's successful drive.
Knowles praised the special con
tributions of Director-Choreographer
Joe Layton, who could not be at the
annual meeting because of his in
volvement in California with the
movie version of "Annie."

LAMB
Mrs. Mae Dail Lamb. 59. of 207
WooJland Street, died Wednesday of
last week in her home.
A native of Bertie County, she was
the daughter of the late James and
Essie Stafford Dail and the wife of
Wilbur O. Lamb. She was a former
supervisor with Hertford Ladies
Appareli and was a member of
Burgess Baptist Church.
Besides her husband, she is survived
by four daughters, Mrs. Don (Linda)
Adams of Chesapeake, Va. and Mrs.
Daisy Lane, Mrs. Chris (Diane)

Catfish Hunter Boast, scheduled for
Saturday, Dec. 5, has been canceled.

Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the
Chapel of Swindell Funeral Home by
Rev. Noah Toler.
The Burgess Choir sang
"Whispering Hope" and "Beyond the
Sunset" accompanied by Don Adams,
organist.
Pallbearers were Charles Barker,
Cameron Pierce, Robert Taylor, Jr.,
Lloyd (Pete) Owens, Sidney Copeland
and Frank Ward. Sr.
Burial followed in Cedarwood
Cemetery.

A native of Horry County, S.C., he
was the son of the late Leon Z. and
Agnes Edith Anderson Fowler and the
husband of Mrs. Clara O'Neal Fowler.
He was a retired carpenter and at
tended the Edenton Church of God.
Besides his wife, surviving are
three step-daughters, Mrs. Shelia
Keeling of Va. Beach, Va? Mrs. Rose
Beasley of Raleigh and Mrs. Betty A.
Ray of Zebulon; one son, Leon Z.
Fowler, Jr., of Chesapeake, Va.. two
sisters, Mrs. Aileen Bynum of
Durham and Mrs. Gladys Brewer of
Selma, N.C.; one brother, Oscar
Fowler of Raleigh; six grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are pending
at Swindell Funeral Home in Hert
ford.
BECXWITH
DURHAM - Howard R. Beckwith,
66, died suddenly at Durham General
Hospital Wednesday.
Funeral Services were held Friday,
November 20th at St. Catherine's
Catholic Church in Oxford, N.C.
followed by Military Honors at the
grave.
He was a veteran of World War II
and was retired^ from McLean
Trucking Co. He also was a member
of the American Legion, Moose Lodge
and a Life Member of the Disabled
Veterans Association.
Survivors include his wife Eunice
W. Beck with; four sons, Jerry,
Danny, John and Robert ; four sisters*
Mrs. Edna Pattrick of TombalU
Texas, Mrs. Margaret Brathnell, Mrs.;
