Pirates hold their number six ranking The Perquimans Pirates were ranked number six in eastern North Carolina this week following victories over Manteo and Murfreesboro last week. The Pirates rallyed in the second half of both games, defeating the Redskins M-57 and the Raiders 79-73 in double overtime. The Lady Pirates lost to Manteo in overtime. 50-47, while the jayvees breezed past the Redskins. 7M6. Sixth in the east last week, Perquimans (13-4, 5-1 in conference) is still ahead of Currituck in the polls, though the conference-leading Knights (11-3, 6-0 in conference) beat the Pirates three weeks ago. Perquimans will have a showdown with Currituck tomorrow night at PCHS. As in the first game against Manteo. the Redskins didn't give Perquimans a chance to break the game open during the first half. But Manteo went flat at the opening of the third quarter and the Pirates waltzed by them Manteo led in the first quarter, lt 13, Brad Frierson scored eight points for the Pirates. Ten points by Robert Mallory in the second quarter gave Perquimans the lead, M-30. at the half. The Pirates then put on their best show of the season in the tnird quarter, by scoring on every trip downcourt except one. and forcing six Redskin turnovers Going into the fourth quarter. Perquimans had broke the game open. 65-41. Every player but one scored for PCHS. James Riddick had one of his best games this season, scoring IS points, with three blocked shots and two steals. But the best performance of the game goes to Charles Leigh, who filled in underneath, scoring his season-high 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Rec happenings JUNIOR BASKETBALL - Last Saturday, Hertford lost to the Edenton Nets 60 to 29. E. White demonstrated excellent basketball ability by scoring 36 points for the winners. Also. M. Gashins added 14. Anthony Foreman led the losers with 8. On Tuesday. Edenton's Knicks beat Hertford 50 to 36. R. Holley had 20 and T. Holley 16 for the Knicks. Arnold White and Bryan Modlin both had 10 for the losers. Next, the Devils slipped past the Bucks 39 to 28. Marshall Tillett led the winners with 10 and Buck Newby had 14 for the Bucks. On Wednesday, the Devils defeated the Royals 19 to 17 Rodney Hill had ten for the winners and Arnold White 7 for the losers. At 7:30, the Nuggest destroyed the Bucks 50 to 22. Rodney Lyons and Darvin Felton both had 18 for the winners. Russell Parker had 16 for the losers. We also made up the snowed-out championship game of the Perquimans-Chowan Midget Tour nament. In that game, the Nuggets squeezed by the Devils in a close one ? 29 to 27. Rodney Lyons had 14 for the winners anil Marshall Tillett 12 for the losers. ADULT BASKETBALL - On Monday, Snook's Casino beat the 76ers 54 to 40. Then the 49ers defeated Woodards 53 to 35. On Thursday, the 76ers defeated Woodard's 64 to 56. The Pirates hit 24 of 41 shots from the floor, or N percent. Against Murfreesboro. Perquimans played three poor quarters ? "one of our worst games this year." said coach Celvin Webster ? then rallyed in the fourth quarter and the following two overtime periods. Mallory had a season-high 31 points, but shot poorly in the first three quarters, hitting S-of-13. The Raiders led 17-t at the end of the first quarter, and 35-27 at the half. Murfreesboro upped its lead to 12. 50-38, going into the fourth quarter, and it looked as if they might walked away with it, but Perquimans out scored them 24 to 12 in the final quarter, tying the game and sending it into overtime. The game was tied 68-all with six seconds left when Perquimans missed a last shot, sending the game into a second overtime, where the Pirates took a five-point lead and hung on to win. Mallory scored seven points in the second overtime, an<? 12 points in the fourth quarter. Troy Jackson scored 19 points for the ni^ht, Coston nine. Riddick six, Leigh five. Parker and Ferebee four, and Frierson one. The Lady Pirates have lost all but one of the games this season by less than six points, and their last six by less than (our. Ormond. who fouled out late in the game, had 11 rebounds. Jackie White scored eight points. Babe Towe six. and Juandice Tolson seven. The difference in the game was the Lady Pirates' 4-of-12 shooting at the foul line, many of those one-and-one situations. All but one of the jayvees scored in their 70-46 rout of Manteo. Coach Pete Hunter played his subs during the second quarter, Perquimans leading 23-6 at the end of one. The lead was cut to 33-25 in the second quarter, and the starters came back in the third to open the game up again, 59-40. Norman Mallory and Dennis Hunter each scored eight points in the first quarter, Mallory finishing with 12 and Hunter with 16.
