Perq uimans Three Weekly contributors launch cooking/gardening book BrTOMOffrmosrr Aa editor of the PERQUIMANS WEEKLY. I Mk our readers to excuse us a moment while we pat ourselves on the back. This bit of self-congratulation is generated as we page through a just published book, a book whose authors say waa spawned, after a fashion, within the pages of this newspaper. And if this book is a success, which we are certain it will be. there will be others like it. each with its origin in this humble community paper. In fact, the book is even dedicated to us. Now that we've ajHrfauded our selves for our modest coatrttwUM to this literary achievement, we'll continue with the (acts on the folks who did the real work. Jean Winslow, who appears in this paper each week as The Perquimans Gardener. Edna Wolverton. who decorates our Cook's Corner, and Chris Kornegay. the pen behind our editorial page cartoons, have com bined talents to create what they call a "kitchen and garden weekly hand book" entitled INSIDE OUT. The book will go on sale in Perquimans County beginning April 13 at a sandwich luncheon-bake sale autograph session from 11:30 a m to 2 p.m. at Holy Trinity Church in Hert ford. The church will sell the book exclusively as a fundraiser for the following thirty days, after which it will be sold in bookstores. The book began one day in May of 1M0 as the three lounged around in Jean's backyard. It was Jean's idea, as they recall, for the three to gather up their contributions to the Weekly and put them together into a book. At first, Chris and Edna thought she Brock Wfcislow Named to State Band Brock Whitlow, age 14, hu been selected u a trombonist for the 1M2 North Carolina Jr. High School Honors Band. This band is made op of the best Jr. High School musicians in the state. Rehearsals and a concert by the band wfll take place at the N.C. State University in Raleigh, on April 23, 24, and 25. Brock, an 8th grade student at Perquimans Union School, was also selected this year as a member of the All-State Eastern District Band which was held at Atlantic Christian College in Wilson. He was one of only two 8th grade students to march with the PCHS "Marching Pirates" this past fall. An honor student at Union, Brock also plays basketball and baseball for the school teams. He is the son of William and Susan Wlnlaow of Belvidere. Chris Kornegay, Jean Winslow and Edna Wolverton was kidding, but Jean soon set them straight on that score, and the work began. Pushed along by former Weekly editors Mike and Noel McLaughlin, they worked separately for the next few months, each editing and reworking and redrawing her work, and sending copies to the other two. The format of the book was decided upon from the start, and taken from their weekly contributions to the paper: a week-by-week compendium of what one should be doing in the garden and what to do in the kitchen, along with drawings to fit. Edna's cooking column jived with what Jean was planting in her garden at the time, and Chris' drawings to fit both. They managed to avoid the first stumbling block of collaboration: arguments over who knows best. "If one of us said, 'I've got an idea,' and the others said 'Yuck!', you didn't feel bad about it," said Edna. "We were open and honest with each other." "We didn't take anything seriously," added Chris. "Yeah, we laughed about it," continued Edna. "I hope we laugh all the way to the bank," said Jean. And it went on like that, the three bouncing comments off each other. "We worked off each other's ideas," said Edna. "Like. I was always thinking we'd have a hole in the cover, and Chris took that idea and made it a window and added geraniums." And that's how the cover turned out. They didn't have to go to but a few publishers to find one to print the book. Publishing company JCP of Virginia Beach. Va. was sold on the idea from the start ? something different from the usual cookbook or garden book ? and liked it better when they read it. "When they first heard it," said Jean, "they said. 'Hey. that sounds good.' When they saw it, they said 'Hey, this really is good !"' We at the Weekly are admittedly a bit biased concerning our con tributors, but frankly we find Jean Winslow's prose to be just about the most quotable stuff you'll ever read. For example: . "We have taken to watching for the hummingbirds, and one in particular has struck our interest. While her pattern of feeding is quite normal in that she feeds in flight, recently she came flying in after having missed a day because of showers. Each time she fed. she swished up to a pecan limb and actually sat there. I ob served her doing this three separate times and pondered the mystery: who ever sees a hummingbird sit? Then, being a mother myself, it dawned upon me what she was thinking as she (Continued on page ten) TRI COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT ASSOCIATION, INC. P O BOX 429.
