By SUSAN HABBIS "When I started working, we had the building over there which is the recreation department now," Mrs. Addie Keegan begins telling of her career as a library assistant with the Perquimans County public library. Mrs. Keegan reveals that she began working when the library was born ? in June 1937. Back then, she reminisces, there were only two shelves of books across the back of the room which were donated by the Woman's Club. At that time, Hertford Grammar School was located on the same block facing West Academy Street. In 1956, the school was destroyed by fire. The lunchroom was saved from burning and was designated as the beginning of a new county library. What was the kitchen facility of the old school is now the children's sec tion of the present library. Mrs. Keegan also began to help rebuild the grammar school library at the new Hertford Grammar School on Dobbs Street. None of the library books had been saved in the Are, so a new collection had to be started from scratch. She worked part time there for several yean. Many rural children remember Mrs. Keegan most from her book mobile route, which was started in 1949. The first bookmobile, she recalls, was jinxed "We had a flat tire every time we went out," she chuckles. The next bookmobile met with better success and operated from 1957 until 1976 when the Perquimans County library became a part of the Pettigrew Regional Library. Mrs. Keegan was raised in Perquimans County ? near the Beach Springs area ? and has stayed here all her life. She also raised two sons here. Tommy, who now lives in California, and Doward, who resides in Plymouth. Her church affiliation is Hertford Baptist, where she is a member of a missionary circle. She is also involved with a home demonstration club. Although she is retiring in May, Mrs. Keegan says she will work part time after that helping out and filling in. "I don't want to get out of everything," she says. Librarian Ann Jones is glad Mrs. Keegan will be sticking around. "She'll be helping us out," Jones said. She added that Mrs. Keegan will be a great asset to the staff in that she is already knowledgeable of the library and will be right at home there. Not one for a lot of pomp and cir cumstance. Mrs. Keegan preferred not to have ? big to-do of ? retirement party. The library board and staff will honor Mrs. Keeg#n at a luncheon at Whistling Pines on Sunday, capping off her SS-year career as library assistant. It sure will seem like a different place without Mrs. Keegan's greeting, but one gets the feeling she'U be hanging around the library at least until she gets her car out of the habit of driving to its second home. High School orientation set In order to become acquainted with the new academic environment in which theyvwill find themselves in September, eighth grade students at Perquimans Union School will par ticipate in Perquimans High School's Orientation Program, May 19, at 10 a.m. In all situations there are "rules of the road" to learn; there is a need to become acquainted with the new environment and bridge the gap between the old and the new. It is hoped that fears will be dispelled as a result of this ex perience, and that an inchoate sense of belonging and understanding at goals and purposes of this new ac tivity will be readily grasped. The program will start promptly at 10 a.m. with a tour of the buildings and grounds. Why pay service charges when you can bank the \\&chaviaFree\\ky?
