Carolyn Williams wa? elected a* a
delegate (or North Carolina to attend
the annual National Education
Association (NEA) Convention in Los
Angeles July 1-6.
There were ISO delegates from this
state in attendance.
The delegates addressed such
issues as reduced federal funding for
public schools, tuition tax credit, the
Equal Rights Amendment, pursuit of
world educational program! and
instruction, reduction and freeze of
nuclear weapons, Increasing teacher
excellence and more.
The next convention will convene in
Philadephia.
Mrs. Williams is a resident of
Belvidere and a former instructor at
Hertford Grammar School.

first child, a daughter, Betsy Ann.
Betsy weighed eight pounds at her
birth at Chowan Hospital on July 12.

Trenton, N.J. ? Hattie F. Jennette,
70, a native of Perquimans County,
died Sunday in a hospital.
Survivors include three daughters,
Hattie Waller of Hertford, Lillie
Robinson of Mount Vernon. N.Y., and
Mary Sailor of Trenton, N.J., five
sons, George Jennette of Chicago, 111.,
Elias Jennette and Bishop Percy
Jennette, both of Trenton, N.J.,
James Jennette of Levittown, Pa. and
Joseph Jennette of Dobbs Ferry,
N.Y.; four sisters, Georganna Skinner
and Katie Jones, both of Hertford,
Cora Collins of Edenton and Catherine
Brown of Glencoe; five brothers,
Booker T. Felton of Westbury, N.Y.,
Theodore Felton of Hertford, the Rev.
Daniel Felton of Virginia Beach, Va.,

A funeral was held Tuesday at 2
p.m. in Pentecostal Holiness Church
in Hertford by Bishop R A. Griswould.
Burial followed in the Tucker Family
Cemetery, with Lowe Funeral Home
in charge.
WOOD
Freshwater Poole Wood, 87, died
July 6 at his residence in Camden.
A funeral was conducted July 8 in
Twiford's Memorial Chapel by the
Rev. Joseph Scaff. Burial was held in
the Old Hollywood Cemetery.
He was a native of Woodville and
had lived in Camden for the past 60
years.
He was the son of the late George
Henry and Josephine Pierce Wood
and the widower of Elsie Griffin
Wood. He was a farmer and the
founder of F.P. Wood & Son Inc., a
past master and a member of
Widow's Son Masonic Lodge 75, and a
member of Woodville Baptist Church.
He was an honorary member of the
board of directors of First Union
National Bank.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs.
B.W. Hurdle of Richmond, Va.; two
sons, F.P. Wood, Jr. and George M.
Wood, both of Camden; a sister, Mrs.
W.B. Whitley of Woodville; and seven
grandchildren.
LANE
Mrs. Maude Ward Lane, 86, died
July 6 at Albemarle Hospital.
A funeral was conducted July 8 in
Swindell Funeral Home by the Rev.
Joseph Scaff. Burial was in the Ward
family cemetery.
A native of Perquimans County, she
was the widow of Charlie Edward
Lane and a member of Epworth
United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters,
Mrs. Roy Nixon of Hertford and Mrs.
Glenn Maxwell of Pensacola, Fla.; a
son, Linwood E. Lane of Elizabeth
City; a sister, Mrs. Irene Matthews ol
Virginia Beach, Va.; seven grand
children; and nine great
grandchildren.
JONES
Ozella S. Jones of Norfolk died July
3 in a hospital.
She was a native of Hertford, and
the widow of Benjamin F. Jones. She
was a retired domestic worker and a
member of St. Thomas AMEZ Churcli
and Senior Citizens of Berkley.
Survivors include two daughters

Simmons of Norfolk; three sisters
Evelyn Everett and Martha Coker
both of Brooklyn, NY, and Minnu
Welch of Hertford; a brother, Stevei

Marion Butler Meads, Sr., 87, die*
July 7 in his home.
He was a retired farmer and wa
formerly employed by R.L. Parke
Meat and Packing Co. and Davis
Hardware Co. He was a member of
Symons Creek Tabernacle.
Survivors include his wife, Mary
Whidbee Meads; three daughters.
Lousie Combs and Jean Hobbs, both
of Elizabeth City, and Josie Lee
Forrest of Greensboro; five sons,
William H. Meads, Terrance M.
Meads and Marion B. Meads. Jr., all
of Elizabeth City, Richard C. Meads
of Hertford, and the Rev. Samuel R.
Meads of Warsaw, Ind.; a brother,

Henry Thomas Williams, 79, a
native of Perquimans County, died at
his home in Long Beach, Cal. June 28
after a long illness.
He is survived by his wife,
Margaret Harris Williams, formerly
of Weeksville; three children, Mrs.
Melvin Berry and Mrs. Joe Moose, of
Long Beach, and Tommy Williams,
USAF, stationed in Germany; eight
grandchildren; and four great
grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs.
Linford Winslow and Mrs. Wallace
Baker, of Belvidere, and Mrs. Sam
mie Sutton, of Hertford; and three
brothers, Mr. Herbert Williams, of
Belvidere, and Mr. Carroll Williams
and Mr. Howard Williams, Sr., of
Hertford.
SKINNER
Emar Skinner of Virginia Beach, a
native of Hertford, died July 9 in a
hospital.
He was retired from Robbins
Corner Grocery Store. He was a
Baptist.
Survivors include five sisters,
Ommie Daniels of Virginia Beach,
Carrie Stepeney and Helen Lawson of
Norfolk, Arviria Jennett of Edenton,
and Rosa Brooks of Hertford; and a
brother, Charlie C. Skinner of Nor
folk.
A funeral was held on Wednesday in
Community Funeral Home, Norfolk
Chapel, by the Rev. C.H. Williams.
The burial was held in Roosevelt
Memorial Park.
RUSSELL
Thomas Loius Russell, 81, of
Manteo, died Saturday in a hospital.
He was a native of Perquimans
County and the husband of Emma
Mae Crawford Russell.
He was a self-employed barber and
was a deacon of Manteo Baptist
Church. He was a member of
Woodmen of the World.
Other survivors include two
daughters, Mrs. Eric Harry Watkins
of Elizabeth City and Mrs. Rudolph
Peele of Manteo; two sisters, Annie

James Thomas (Jim) Winslow, 85,
of Rt. 1, Belvidere, died Saturday in
Chowan Hospital. He was a native of
Perquimans County and the husband
of Pennie Gregory Winslow.
He was a retired farmer and a
member of Up River Friends
Meeting.
Other survivors include a daughter,
Lizzie Harrell of Hertford; a son,
James Thomas Winslow of Norfolk;
four grandchildren; and four great
grandchildren.
A funeral was held Monday at 2
p.m. in the chapel of Swindell Funeral
Home by the Rev. Rendal D. Cosand.
The burial was held in Up River
Cemetery.

Football teams begin practice
Candidates (or the Perquimans
High School varsity and junior varsity
football teams will hold their first
practice on Monday. August 2, at the
high school field.
All candidates must have had a
physical examination before begin
ning practice. Those who wish to have
a free physical can contact coach Pak<j}
Morgan at the high school. Candidates
will have six days of conditioning
before practicing in pads.
Aging workshop scheduled
The Area Agency on Aging has
announced a one-day workshop on
Tuesday, July 20 for all persons
dealing with older adults. The
workshop will be held at the ARPDC
Building in Hertford, beginning at
9:15.
This workshop will be conducted by
Dr. Joyce Elliott. Dr. Elliott earned
her Doctor of Education in Geron
tology from Teachers College of
Columbia University in New York
City.
She has worked as an instructor in
the Institute of Study for Older Adults,
a program which sent courses into
senior centers and nursing homes in (
the New York City area.
, Dr. Elliott will discuss "Attitudes
on Aging" and "Challenges of Death
and Dying."
The registration fee is $4.00, which
covers lunch that day. Please register
by July 16.

Public Announcement
Mayor Lloyd Ray Morgan of the Town ot
Winfall has announced that a public hearing
concerning application for a grant from the
Small Cities Community Development Block
Grant Program will be held on July 27,
1982, at 7:00 p.m. in the Municipal Building.
The proposed Community Development
project would be centered in the King
Street area of Winfall, including White
Street, Louise Street, Cathryn Street, and a
portion of Desert Road. The project would
include the rehabilitation of approximately
34 homes, the acquisition and demolition
of 16 dilapidated homes and the relocation
of the residents. This pfjblic hearing is
being held prior to the submission of the
1982 Community Development Block Grant
application in order to inform the citizens
about the proposed project and to obtain
public input. All interested citizens are
invited to attend.
