Wide World of Sports P.C.H.S. Football The 1981 P.C.H.S. Football Team faced several challenges as it approached this past season. Some of them were as follows: replace several key seniors who had graduated; play a tougher schedule than the past two years; avoid com placency due to the out standing 1980 season; work together as a team rather than as individuals; and avoid injuries. Despite a slow start, the Pirates met these challenges and finished the season as conference champs with a fine 8-2-1 record. Highlights of the season were a second straight vic tory over Edenton Holmes, an undefeated conference record, and an opportunity to participate in the playoffs. Offensive leaders this year were Donnie Parker, quar terback; James Banks and James Bunch, running backs; James Riddick, Terry Lightfoot, and Robert Mallory, receivers; and Mark Lindsey, Melvin Coston, Derrick Johnson, and Troy Edwards, linemen. Defensive leaders were Mark Lindsey, Melvin Coston, and Derrick Johnson, linemen; Troy Jackson, Joseph Walker, and James Banks, linebackers; James Riddick and Jules Ferebee, ends; and Danny White, Danny Baker, and Joseph Griswould, defensive backs. We will lose several valuable senior players when .the Class of 1982 graduates. Their efforts have played a big role in the 17-3-1 record of the past two seasons. The 1982 season will bring new challenges for the young men who will wear black and gold. Hopefully, the com bination of senior leadership and youthful enthusiasm can provide another successful campaign. Lady Pirates The Lady Pirates' basketball season was one of ups and downs. They had a record of &-14. Their wins included victories over 3-A foes Plymouth and Bertie. The Pirates were led by all coaference selection Batbsheba Ormond with 11.9 points per game and 8.2 rebounds and Juanita Green with 11.0 points and 10.4 rebounds. Other starters included Jackie White, Babe Towe and Jaundice Tolson. Even though the girls had 14 losses they were highly competitive, llost of the losses were by six points or less. The highlight of the season was the conference tour nament. The Pirates upset the Raiders from Mur freesboro and conference champion Gates County the first two nights, advancing to the championship game. After getting into foul trouble, the Lady Pirates lost to Currituck. Bathsheba Or mond was named to the all tournament team. The MVP of the Year went to Bathsheba Ormond and Most Dedicated Award to Jaundice Tolson. J. V . Football The 1981 Junior Varsity Football Team was very successful. The team, even though composed mostly of freshmen,' won the con ference title with a 4-0 record. They had a 6-2 overall record with the only losses being to 3 A teams, Edenton Holmes and Bertie. Quickness, determination, and execution were trademarks of this youthful and small band of Pirates. Strengths of the offense were the running of Gene Madre and Roy Hall; the passing of Richard Thach and Teton Reid; Virgil Whitehurst's receiving; and the blocking of Talmadge Watson, David Parker and Jeffery Modlin. Defensive leaders were Marlow Ferebee, Richard Lightfoot, Linwood Parker, and Sam Humphrey. J.V. Basketball The Perquimans County High Junior Varsity Basketball Team started the season with a lot of poise and composure. The team opened the season beating the Bertie Senior High J.V. team 61-60, but fell short in four out of the next five games. With three sophomores and two fresh men starting, the team lacked experience, cooperation, and defense. The team's record was 4-6 for the conference and 7-12 overall. Jimmy Skinner and Jeffrey Modlin were the starting guards. Rodney Gordon and Norman Mallory were the forwards with Dennis Hunter starting at center. Gordon was the leading scorer with a total of 257 points, and Dennis was the second leading scorer with 256 points. mw? ? phwwm? ?? Running Pirates The 1981-82 season was a good one for the P.C.H.S. Boys' Varsity Basketball Team. Despite lacking in height and having only two seniors on the team, they were able to post a 16-9 record. They finished second in the conference regular season race with a 7-3 record. The highlight of the season was defeating Currituck for the conference tournament championship. The team advanced to the semi-finals of the district tournament before being eliminated. Leaders for the season were all-conference per formers Robert Mallory and Troy Jackson. Also playing key roles were James Rid dick, Ronnie Ferebee, Donnie Parker, Melvin Coston, Charles Leigh, and Brad Frierson. With most of the team coming back, 1982-83 should be another successful season. Varsity Cheerleaders The Perquimans County High School Varsity Cheerleaders have been extremely active this year. The girls cheered our varsity football team all the way to the state playoffs. Playoff week was especially busy, with a public pep rally in front of the courthouse in Hertford and a rowdy rally in the P.C.H.S. auditorium. Our girls entered the Second Annual WGAI Cheerleading Competition and won top prize for the most original cheer. They also worked hard through basketball season, cheering our varsity boys again on to the tournament championship. P.CTH.S. had an outstanding year in sports. Whether winning or losing, these young ladies gave it their all and represented P.C.H.S. proudly.
