-News briefs Notary public seminar set Jan. 25 Jeanne White, Perquimans County register of deeds, will teach a one week indoctrination course for new Notaries Public. Sponsored by the continuing education division at College of The Albemarle, the course meets recently-implemented state requirements for notary cer tification. The seminar-style course will begin at T p.m. on Tuesday. Jan. 25 at the Perquimans County High School Vocational Building. The second and final class of the 5-hour course will be held at 7 p. m . on Thursday. An $8 registration fee will be charged. ARPDC schedules meeting Jan. 20 The Albemarle Regional Planning and Development Commission will meet at 7:30 p.m., Thursday. Other Business Lamaze class begins in F ebruary Prepared childbirth classes will be offered in Hertford by Kate Shales, beginning in February. The classes, often referred to as "Lamaze classes" will offer an understanding of pregnancy and birth, coping techniques of breathing and relaxation for labor; films and discussion. Classes will be held one night a week for 6 to 7 weeks. There will be a fee for class materials. Classes are open to all expectant parents ? single mothers as well as couples. COA sponsors financial aid class January is one of the most im portant months of the year for students whose enrollment in college in the fall of 1983 hinges upon whether or not they receive financial aid, according to Lloyd Armstrong, student financial aid director at College of The Albemarle. Armstrong will conduct several financial aid oriented worshops for parents and students during the month. The seminars will be held on the COA campus and at high schools in Gates and Perquimans counties. At 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 20, Armstrong and Belinda Patterson, COA ad missions director, will be at the Perquimans County High School auditorium in Hertford. The meetings coincide with National Student Financial Aid Awareness Month. Recognizing an increasing need for financial assistnace to further studies beyond high school, Gov. James B. Hunt, Jr. also has proclaimed Jan. 24-29 as Student Financial Aid Awareness Week in North Carolina. Extension plans cotton meeting There will be a cotton up-date meeting to access the interest of county farmers on growing cotton in 1983, on Monday. February 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Perquimans County Extension Office Building. Please call 426-5428 if you plan to attend. Area obituaries BUFFLAP EDENTON, NC ? James Edwin Bufflap, 90, of 17 Queen Anne Place, co-founder and Editor emeritus of the Chowan Herald Newspaper, died Saturday in his home. A native of Lancaster, Pa., he was the husband of the late Kate Kline Bufflap. Active in civic affairs, he was a past master of Unanimity Masonic Lodge 7; past worthy patron of Edenton Chapter 302, Order of the Eastern Star; and a member of Scottish Rite Bodies, and Sudan Temple of Newbern. He also was a member of Order of Red Men, in which he was the keeper of records, and Edenton United Methodist Church, where he had served as a church officer. Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Bufflap of Edenton; five stepsons; and two granddaughters, Sondra Ward of Kitty Hawk and Mrs. Jim Boyd of Winston-Salem; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral was held at 2 p.m. Monday in Edenton United Methodist Church by the Rev. Richard Blankenhom. Burial with Masonic rites followed in Beaver Hill Cemetery with Williford-Barham Funeral Home in charge. Memorial donations may b-> made to a favorite charity. REVELL AMITYVILLE, NY - Christine Taylor Revell, 44, a native of Hert ford, N.C., and the widow of David Lee Revell, died last Tuesday in a hospital. Survivors include three daughters, Charlene Revell, Debbie Revell and Shelia Revell; and three sons. Reginald Revell, Jeffrey Revell and Stepfon Revell, all of Amityville; and four grandchildren. A funeral was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday in St. Paul AME Zion Church in Hertford, N.C., by the Revs. J.H. London and W.L. Taylor, burial followed in New Bethel Baptist "See me for State Farm Renters Insurance. The rates are low, the service outstanding." Church Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were made by Stallings Funeral Chapel in Hertford. STANLEY Mrs. Elizabeth Boyce Stanley, 73, of 221 E. 25th Street, Norfolk, Va., died Thursday morning in Norfolk General Hospital. A native of Perquimans County, she was the daughter of John Win borne Boyce and Mrs. Jennie Wood Boyce and the widow of Robert K. Stanley. She was a self-employed manicurist. Suriviing are two sons, Robert B. Hall of Virginia Beach. Va. and Charles W. Hall of Williamsburg, Va.; a brother, R. Harry Boyce of Virginia Beach, Va., and three grandchildren. Graveside services were held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Needham officiating. Swindell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. SAWYER PORTLAND. ORE. ? William Curtis Sawyer, 84, a native of New Hope, died last Wednesday in his home. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Bernie Smith of Florida and Mrs. Edna Godfrey of Route 3, Hertford; and a brother, Blake Sawyer of Norfolk, Va. A funeral was held at 11 a.m. Monday in Holman Funeral Home in Portland. A private burial followed in Lone Fir Cemetery. Information was provided by Swindell Funeral Home. HUNTER Thomas Ward Hunter, 74, of Route 2, was pronounced dead on arrival at Chowan Hospital Sunday morning. A native of Perquimans County, he was the son of the late Jack E. and Lizzie Ward Hunter and was the husband of Mrs. Clodia Robertson Hunter. He was a retired farmer and was a member of Anderson United Methodist Church. Besides his wife, surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Calvin (Lizzie Ward) Godfrey of Route 3, Mrs. Joe (Irene) Meads and Mrs. John (Jean) Chappell. both of Route 2, Hertford; one sister, Mrs. Ima Asbell of Tyner; one brother. William Hunter of Winston-Salem; two half-sisters. Miss Josephine Hunter and Mrs. Jim (Eleanor) Bass, both of Hertford; one half-brother, Johnny G. Hunter of Concord, eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Swindell Funeral Home by the Rev. Carol Goehring. Entombment will be made in the family mausoleum at a later date. Pallbearers were Larry Lane, Noah Felton, Jr., Wayne Howell, Linwood Boyenton, Melvin Forehand and Jimmy Hunter. In addition to all other penalties prescribed by law, any person whose duty it is to list any property who willfully fails or refuses to list the same within the time prescribed by law shall be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed five hundred dollars ($500.00) or imprisonment not to exceed six months. The failure to list shall be prima facie evidence that the failure was willful. Any person who removes or conceals property for the purpose of evading taxation or who aides or abets the removal or con cealment of property for the purpose of evading taxation shall be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed five hundred dolars ($500.00) or imprisonment not to exceed six months. PROPERTY TAX RELIEF FOR ELDERLY AND PERMANENTLY DIS ABLED PERSONS G.S. 105-277.1 excludes from property taxes the first eight thousand five hundred dollars ($8,500) in assessed value of certain property owned by North Carolina residents aged 65 or older or totally and permanently disabled whose disposable: income does not exceed nine thousand dollars ($9,000). The exclusion covers real property occupied by the owner as his or her permanent residence and/or household personal property used by the owner in connection with his or her permanent residence.
