Calvin Whedbke Interdenominational Sunday lesson Going up to Jerusalem Luke 19:28-48 Jesus Dramatised His Messiahship - Luke 19:29-36 From the time Jesus was twelve years old and was discovered by His parents with the doctors in the temple at Jerusalem, until He died on the cross, He planned and involved others in His plan to do His work, with a purpose. His act of sending two of His disciples to bring the lowly ass for him to ride upon, as prophesized in Zech. 9:9, was to dramatize that He knew the ass would be there and that the owners r would not object to such blantant thievery. His dramatic ride into .Jerusalem, with His disciples proclaiming Him as the King that had come in the name of the Lord, singing his praises, caused the Pharisees to rebuke Jesus because of the great show being put on, but Jesus knew that these dramatic acts would, and did, impress upon the people that He was the Son of God His main purpose on earth. Jesus persistance was the key to His ac complishments. We all could take heed to this teaching. We believe that Jesus died for our sins, but how many of us put feet to our thoughts and go out and tell others, persistantly, or do for others, consistantly, or pray for others and our own works daily. Jesus refused objections (Luke 19:39-40) and continued towards His main object, just as we should today. Jesus Demonstrated Authority Luke It: 45-46 Jesus was a compassionate, kind hearted, loving person, as He showed in Luke 19:41-44, when He wept for Jerusalem and it's people because He knew that the Holy City would be destroyed but-Jesus was not timid and afraid. When He came to the temple (John 2:13-16) and found that the selling of sacrificial animals had become crassly commercial, and even corrupt, He did not care who knew that He was angry. He drove these offenders from the temple, saying, "Make not my Father's house a house of merchandise." He did two things here. He showed His authority over the House of God and proclaimed authoritively that He was God's Son. When He returned, three years later, and found the merchants and money changers were back (Mark 11:15) Jesus "overthrew the table of the moneychangers and the seats of them that sold the doves, and would not suffer any man should carry any vessel through the tem ple," once again proclaiming His authority. Solomon and Jeremiah proclaimed that the temple was to be kept Holy in the name of the Lord, and now Jesus was proclaiming the same in His name. Jesus Aroused Opposition Luke 19:47-48 Being steadfast is another great aspect of Jesus personality. The priests and Pharisees did all they could to embarrass and trick Jesus in their questioning, but they didn't make allowances for the stead fastness and truthfulness of His answers. The people were very at tentive to Jesus' teaching and, of course, they were amused when Jesus' answers always stopped the priest and Pharisees efforts to destroy His influence. Because Jesus was so popular and because they were jealous of Him and afraid for their business ventures (in other words, they were afraid of being hurt in their pocket books) they decided He had to go, and it certainly does tell a lot about these kind of people that they were afraid and approached Jesus at night. (Luke 22-53) They really resorted to violence because they could not find any other way to destroy Him, but through it all Jesus was courageous and steadfast. Many of today's Christians do this, also-it's called losing courage. Our lesson today teaches us to have a purpose in life-to live for Christ-to tell aaout Him-to involve others. Also, to live our lives with authority-never showing any doubt or waywardness in our living, but steadfastly going forward to our goal of eternal life through Christ, taking as many others along with us as we are able.
