Perquimans Pirates defeat Manteo Redskins T uesday By ERIC SKINNER The Perquimans Pirates defeated the Manteo Redskins at Manteo high school on Tuesday night February 1 with a score of ?5-?5. The Pirates out scored the Manteo Redskins in the first, second and fourth quarter. Through the hands of Troy Jackson, James Riddick, Brad Frierson, and Melvin Coston the bail was thrown, dribbled, kicked, shot, and almost slamdunked. Jackson, Perquimans high pointer opened up with a jumpshot that sent the team sizzling. A steal from Melvin Coston, George Long and several fast breaks gave the Pirates a lead at the end of the first quarter 21-8. - Starting off the second quarter, Dennis Hunter, Jackson, Ferebee, Riddick and Coston worked as an iron curtain, stopping any advances the Manteo Redskins made toward their goal, while the Pirates doubled their score, making the half time score 50-31. Alternates Charles Leigh, Teton Reid and. George. Long were called in during the third quarter in place of the starters. The Manteo Redskins started the third quarter with a surprising come back, penetrating the Pirates curtain scoring 24 points offensively while holding the Pirates to 15 points. The score at the end of third quarter was 65-55 pirates. Coach Webster said, "We have to play our game, not theirs!" The Pirates played the fouth quarter holding the Redskins to 10 points and scoring 20 points, making the final score 85-65 Pirates. Troy Jackson achieved career total of 1032 points in the Perquimans vs. Murfreesboro game Friday, February 4. The Pirates defeated the Raiders 74-67. During Friday's game, not only did the Pirates defeat the Mufreesboro Raiders they also achieved a dream. The dream to score 1000 points in a high school career. This dream came to Troy Jackson, *? who received the award along with a 32 point high in Friday's game. During the first quarter the Raiders led 18-17, with Leigh 2, Long 4, Riddick 4, Hunter 3, and Jackson 6. Leaving the first quarter and en tering the second the Pirates still fell to the Raiders defense and left the half 33-36 favor the Raiders . At half-time the Perquimans Varisty Basketball team gave Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Cox their thanks, for their kindness shown towards them, on the trip to Manteo on Febuary 1st. The third quarter opened and closed with a top of the key jump-shot by Jackson. Leaving the Raiders to trail at the end of the third 53-45. Stall, was the name of the fourth quarter, as the Perquimans Pirates, went into a four corners offense, and left the final score 74-67. Perquimans points, came from Charles Leigh 12, Troy Jackson 32, James Riddick 12, George Long 3, Teton Reid 4, and Dennis Hunter 9. The Pirates will face Currituck on Febuary 11, in Currituck. High scorers for the Devils were William Fowler, with 9 points and Everett Larabee, with 6 points. Derek Scafl had 2 points. For the Bucks, Derek Rogers and An thony Turner shared the scoring efforts with 10 and 8 points respect fully. In the second game at the evening, the Royals beat the Nuggets 20 to 19. High Scorers for the Royals were Troy Boyce with 12 points, and Lester Whitehusrt and Joey Fincham each had 6 points. Cousins JoJo and Willie Parker scored 15 and 4 points respectfully tor the Nuggets. Standings as of February 4 are Royals-7-0; Bucks-4-3; Devils- 2-5 and Nuggets-1-6. Midget tournament begins Saturday, February 12. Games will be played at 10, it and 12 at the Union Gym. Junior Basketball Perquimans traveled to Edenton on Tuesday, February 1 toplay the Nets.
