Agriculture ; J Welcome to March - it s the month of the awakening moon ?Welcome to' March, month of the Awakening Moon. ?Last quarter of the moon comes up March 6. ?Flower of the month is jonquil. ?Fertiliser perennials and spring flowering bulbs, using four pounds of fertiliser per 100 sq. ft. ?Sprinkle bonemeal on daffodils. ?Start lightening up mulch around pansies, ajuga. ?Apply pre-emergence chemicals to control crab-grass. I myself don't get peturbed over crabgrass growing in the back yard. It's green, and that's the name of the game, right? Sow these seeds in the greenhouse : ageratum, china aster, carnation dianthus, marigold, caladium bulbs, petunias, salvia, stock, allysum, berbena, zennia, nicotinia, stock. Brand New Pretties, Part 1 Let's talk about the purely fun stuff-flowers. And I have got some new flowers for you. That grand old perennial BEYOND THE WEEDS b> J eun W initio w Hemerocallis ( day lily ) comes up with something more gorgeous each year. Wayside Gardens introduces 'Chicago Royal Robe,' 5H inch plum purple blossoms, ruffled edges, Kleh m Nursery's Fathe; Charles Reckamp suitably named his new creation 'Hosanna,' orange rimmed in gold and melon with a green throat. A shade-loving hosta debutante this year is Wayside Garden's 'Gold Standard,' 24 inches high, gold yellow leaves. Barbeleta Gardens is very active In making available to us the work of amateur hybridizers. True to form, it is introducing several new lilies: Wadekampers's 'Snow Lark,' July blooming, white with tan spots. Robinson's 'Statesman' is lime yellow; 'Karissa,' by Dr. R. Ha ring, is clear yellow. Then you've got 'Tradewinds,' a vivid red, and Dr. W. Wtadus' dark yellow 'Atlas.' Marigolds got the most attention this year. Park Seeds 'Inca Orange' and 'Inca Yellow' have tested beautifully for hot, well-drained soil. They grow to about 16 inches with 3Vi inch double blooms. Along with Burpee's 'Royal Hybrid,' which is 20 inches in height, and back yard fence or dunce will be ablaze with color all summer. Put Ferry-Morse' 12 inch high 'Sundance' in front for a great triple play. From Harris Seed comes a dwarf geranium (12 inches) 'Gremlin Bright Pink.' Park and Geo. Ball are retailing star-type geraniums with names like 'Stardust' and 'twinkles.' Frankly, I think the names are very pedestrian for star-type geraniums. How about 'Baby Black Hole Blue' hybrid, 'Quasar Cutie No. 3,' or 'Binary's Big Boom?' They never asked me. Thompson and Morgan is featuring Pan Am's 'Double Duet' and 'Double Rosette.' two new Costa Rican im patiens. Be careful when you receive and open your packet-15 seeds cost 92.85. The New Guinea impatiens 'Sunfire' ain't free either, but Park really wants you to give it a try . All-American gladiolus selections this year are 'Golden Years,' a giant, and 'Flash,' a red picatee with silver accents. Zennias-thank you, God, for in venting zennias-will grow anywhere it's hot and dry. So invest in 'Dasher,' a series that blooms earlier than Peter Pan and stays about 12 inches in height. 'Short Stuff really is, staying at about 8 inches, but has Fur wheat , oats and barley March is the best time to top dress By W.R. JESTER, III County Extension Chairman It is time to begin thinking about top dressing our wheat, oats and barley. March is the best time to top dress. On-farm tests have shown that topdressing in March generally produces 5-12 bushels more wheat than topdressing in April. Top dressing in March is better than topdressing in February bescause it delays the buildup of diseases, particularly powdery mildew and glume blotch. It also reduces the chance of freeze damage resulting from early lush growth. Farming The Ratlands north Carolina AGRICULTURA1 EXTENSION SERVICE Bv Bill Eitcmion Chairman I would recommend that growers not exceed a total of 100 pounds of nitrogen per acre for wheat and oats. Apply only 80 pounds per acre for barley. If nitrogen was applied in the fertilizer, then this should be sub stracted from the total requirement to determine the amount of nitrogen for topdressing. The amount of nitrogen needed can be reduced where small grain follows soybeans or peanuts. Allow 20 pounds per acre for soybeans and 30-40 pounds per acre for peanuts. Also keep in mind the possibility of a copper deficiency in soils with a high organic matter content as in the Tidewater area and in some poorly drained soils in the area. Symptoms include twisted brown tips, yellow leaves and stunted growth. We suggest spraying with a water soluble source of copper at the rate of V4 to 1 pound actual copper per acre if this is the problem. This should be done before the wheat develops lush growth. An application of Banvel (dicamba) (V4 pt.-acre) and 2,4-D amine (two-thirds pt.-acre) will control most winter annuals. Wild garlic is a serious problem in small grain production. It causes growers to lose millions of dollars annually. The presence of garlic in wheat automatically classifies it as feed wheat. Infested fields should be treated with 2,4-D low volatile ester at 1 V4-2 pts . per acre or ( 1 Vfc pt. ) 2,4-D low volatile ester plus ( Vt pt.) Banvel. The low volatile esters are more effective than the amine form. The 2,4-D can be applied with water or liquid nitrogen. The ester form can be mixed directly with liquid N but the amine form must be mixed with 4 parts before it is added to the liquid N. Spray 2,4-D when grain is 4 to 8 inches tall or after tillering but before jointing. Spraying small grain too young or after jointing can result WATER HEATER SALES & SERVICE FURNACES CLEANED & SERVICED ? <==, Let Us Replace Or Repair Those I" Leaky Faucets "ARTIFICER" 4 ONE CAU. The higher rates of 2,4-D increase the risk of grain injury. Use production practices favorable to maximum crop competition. Do not use tank mix of Banvel + 2,4-D on oats. Let's hope it dries up; so we can go! Our peanut meeting was a great success. Several points were made that I think should be reviewed. One point is that peanut farmers should not plant addditional peanuts unless they have a firm contract. The r peanut market is weak at this time. Over production can kill us. A smart thing to do is to plan to plant to cover your quota and try to contract ad ditional poundage. 1982 was good to us because our peanut farmers cut back their acreage. Don't forget this. The Secretary of Agriculture has elected not to increase the quota support in 1983. It will remain at $550 per ton although all the peanut producing state universities show at least 5 percent increase in production costs. * N.C.R.F. 197 TONY WEBB n.c.r.eb 46654 CONSULTING FORESTER-BROKER SURVEYING/APPRAISALS/SALES/MANAGEMENT CURRENTLY FOR SALE: 120 Ac.
