Anderson United Methodist Church Sunday school lesson An Excellent Fellowship Acta 1:4-14 "Ye shall receive ppower, after that the Holy Ghost has come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth." Acts 1:8. Thus Jesus spoke to His Apostles during the 40 day time frame bet ween His death, burial and resurrection, and His ascension unto the Heavenly Father. These must have great days for His followers. They now knew for sure that He was the risen Christ and they understood His Kingdom would be Heavenly, and not earthly in nature. They now, also, began to understand their role in establishing Christ's earlthly church. I can imagine that they were now becoming accutely aware of the fundamental demands upon their lives to follow the Lord's com mandments. It would require their supreme allegiance to Him. It would require a self-denial, walking the "narrow way". It would require giving Him highest priority in their personal lives. It would be a life of faith and trust in the Master, but it would be a labor of love and peace knowing that whatsoever happened along the way God's grace would be an ever present sustainer. Mr. John W. Wade, standard Publishing Co., has this to say about those early Apostles as recorded in the book of Acts. "In 28 brief chap ters is chronicled the incrediable story of how 11 weak and unlettered men were transformed into a dynamic army for Christ through the action of the Holy Spirit. Without resorting to trumpet fanfares, or Hollywood hoopla, the writer gives us a few brief glimpses of the high adventures that were destined to change the whole course of human history." The Ascension of Jesus Acts 1:4-11 In Acts 1:4, Jesus said to those with whom He was assembled, which included the Apostles, that they should not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father. In verse five, He continues, "For John baptised with water, but you will be baptised with the Holy Ghost (Spirit)." (Paraphrased). Jesus reminded them of John's baptism, which some, if not all of them, had received. Perhaps they were, also, reminded of John's promise that the One coming after him would baptise with the "Holy Spirit" and "fire". Great things were about to happen to them. They were soon to receive power. The Enabler. The Holy Spirit would give them the power to wit ness. They were to go unto all the world and witness to the people about the Gospel of Christ. They would tell of His teachings, His sermon on the Mount, his healing, His love for all mankind that brought him eventually to the cross and crucifixion, His burial, His resurrection and His ascension into Heaven to be with the Heavenly Father. And they would witness with zeal and enthusiam, for they were on fire. One can't help but ask oneself if this reminds us very much of the modern church. All about us we see congregations that have the latest facilities and all the equipment needed for an effective job for the Lord, yet nothing very exciting ever happens there. Is it because we lack the spark it takes to ignite and drive us? In verse 9 after Jesus had spoken these things, He was taken up and a cloud received Him out of their sight. The Apostles returned to Jerusalem, gathering in the upper room with others to await the coming of the Holy Spirit. Their time was spent in prayer and supplication, according to verse 14, but we see another important ingredient. They were in "one accord", indicating the unity and harmony which charac terized those early Christians. Lesson based on International Sunday School Lessons by the Lesson Committee.
