A great privilege is ours on Sun
day, March 13 at 11 to hear two
businessmen from eastern N.C. who
were invited by Worldvision to visit
Lebanon. Mr. Guy Mayo, a
businessman from Greenville, and
Mr. Louis Stanfield, City Executive
Director for Planters Bank in Ayden,
will 8hare in slides and message their
first hand report of conditions in
Lebanon today.
Lebanon is the only Christian
country out of the twenty two Arab
nations. In addition, it is the only
democracy other than Israel. Since
the war subsided, the Moslem world
has responded to its own with
millions of dollars to rebuild Islamic
homes. Yet the response of the
Christian community has been slight.
Over 350,000 people in Lebanon are
currently without a roof over their
heads. In addition to the 40,000 that
were killed last year, entire Christian
villages have been destroyed. Our
time is limited and the need is great.
You are cordialy invited to hear

Sunday School lesson _
An Empowered Fellowship
Acta 1:1-4; IMS; 37,31
The Scriptures given for last
week's lesson gave an account of the
days preceding Christ's ascenaion
Into Heaven. Jeaus promised the
Holy Spirit would come upon the
believers which would empower
them to be witnesses throughout the
world. They were to wait in
Jerusalem, which they did, and the
lesson ended with the believers in a
state of prayer and worship and full
of expectancy. The lesson given for
today picks up some ten days later,
on the day of Pentecost, when the
Holy Spirit came upon them. Some
time during the intervening period,
Peter has preached to a group of
about 120 desciples. Also, during this
period, a new Apostle,- Matthias, was
selected to replace Judas, the
betrayer, to bring the number back
up to twelve.
The Coming of The Holy Spirit
Acts 2: 1-4
Pentecost was one of the great
feast days of the Jews, taking it's
name from the fact that it fell on the
fiftieth day after the Sabbath in the
Passover week. Pentecost was also
referred to as "the day of the first
fruits" and "the feast of the har
vests." It was a kind of thanksgiving
day. It would seem that the arrival of
the Holy Spirit was delayed until
Pentecost. On that day thousands of
Jews from all over the Roman em
pire would be gathered in Jerusalem
for this celebration. Thus the
Apostles had not only a larger, but a
more diversified audience, for the
first proclamation of the Gospel.
Acts 2:2-3 relates how the Holy
Spirit came. First there was a sound
from heaven, as a mighty rushing
wind. It must have been a great roar
because there is no indication of an
accompanying wind. This sound
would undoubtably alert others that
something extraordinary was hap
pening. Then the tongues of fire
appeared and sat upon each of the
Apostles. There was no doubt, now,
that something great was taking
place. Verse 4 relates that "they
were all filled with the Holy Ghost."
Jesus had promised that they would
be baptised with th$ Holy Spirit. Both
expressions, "being baptised" and
"being filled" with the Holy Spirit
suggests that the Apostles were
completely under the control of the
Holy Spirit. The result was that they
began to speak with other tongues. It
is clear, from the context, that the
tongues, or languages, they were
speaking were recognizable, and
understood, without benefit of an
interpreter, as noted particularly in
verse 6.
It was a moment of opportunity for
Christianity. Here was a great crowd
of people gathered from many lands
and countries, who spoke different
languages and dialects. Through
these Apostles the Holy Spirit made
witness to Christ's Gospel in
languages they could understand in
their own tongue. They were amazed.
We can hardly imagine the impact to
the Christian movement as these
people carried these messages back
to their homelands and related it to
their people, but that was not all.
Peter stood up and preached a ser
mon that day. His sermon convinced
three thousand people to bplieve and
be baptised. The first procLamatiqf.
of the Good News brought dramat&
results. As we read the Scriptural
account of the events that unfolded
on the day af Pentecost, we are likely
to respond with a comparative
question. That happened to the fin*
century Christians, but what about
the twentieth century in which wi
live? The church today doesn't seen
to have that power of the Holy Spirtf
is it not for the modern day
Christians? It most deflnietly is. R
just needs to be claimed and e*
perienced in individual lives.
