Leukemia Bike-a-thon set March 26
Cycle for Life, a bike-a-thon for
Leukemia . will be held on Saturday.
March M, with proceed* going to the
Leukemia Society of America.
Riding will begin at 2 p.m. at lit.
Sinai Baptiat Church and continue
until 5 p.m.
Registration will begin at 1:30 at
the Church. Participants should pick
up a form from Woodard's Phar
macy or Winfall Supermarket and
solicit pledges for their ride.
Prizes will be awarded the riders
who receive the largest amount of
pledges, which should be turned in by
April 9, with some of the prizes being
awarded the day of the ride. The first

place prise will be a $30 savings bond,
donated by People's Bank It Trust
Co. of Hertford.
In spite of remarkable medical
advances in the last ten years,
leukemia remains a number one
killer disease of children. When a boy
or girl comes by your home asking
you to sponsor them in the upcoming
Cycle for Life, please consider that
the funds will be used right here in
the state of North Carolina in
research and patient-aid.

ALbemarle.
Taught by Annice Peckham, the
course will meet each Tuesday and
Thursday night at 7 P.M. at the

Voter registration books open
The Perquimans County Board of
Election's Office is open from 8:30
12:30, Monday, Wednesday and
Friday for all Perquimans County
residents wishing to register to vote.
The books are always open on this
schedule for registration except 21
working days prior to any election.
Residents should notify the election
office if his-her voter registration
status has changed in any of the
following ways:
Moved from one precinct into
another; moved to another address
in the precinct; address changed by
the U.S. Postal Service; or if your
name has changed.
Anyone having questions as to
whether they are properly registered
may call the Election Office at 426
5545. To insure your right to vote you
must be registered properly.

Daughtry died February 11 at the
Veteran's Hospital after a long
illness. ?
He waa^ native of Hertford and a
member ?f Melton Grove Baptist
Church of Hertford.
He also lived in Brooklyn, New
York and Columbus, Ohio where he
became a member of the Travelers'
Rest Baptist Church.
He was the son of the late Lorenzo
and Isabelle Daughtry. He served in
the WWII and was a foster parent of
the Franklin County Children Ser
vices in Columbus, Ohio.
He is survived by his wife, Doretha
Daughtry; two sons, William
Daughtry of Hemstead, New York,
Herbert Daughtry of Columbui,
Ohio; ooe daughter, France* Lawtoo
of Brooklyn, New York; a foster son,
Andy Bats of Columbus, Ohio; one
sister, Loretta Smalls of Hertford;
four brothers, Henry E. Daughtry of
Hertford, Willie Daughtry, Raymond
Daughtry and Wilson Daughtry all of
Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a daughter-in
law, Sarah Daughtry of Hemstead,
N.Y.; and 12 grandchildren.
A funeral was held February 17 at
Travelers Rest Baptist Church in
Columbus. Burial was in Eastlawn
Cemetery.
SPELLMAN
NORFOLK - Henry A. Spellman
of 1064 Rugby St., a native of Hert
ford and the husband of the late
Arlethia S. SpeUman, died Saturday
in a hospital.
He was a retired 20 year employee
of Norfolk It Western Railway and
was an Army veteran of WWI. He
was a member and class leader of
Greater Metropolitan AME Zion
Church; a member of the National
Association for the Advancement of
Colored People; a senior member of
Hunton Young Men's Christian
Association; and treasurer of the
National Community League.
Survivors include five sisters,
Hattie Bowe, Louise SpeUman and
Alice Jones of Elizabeth City; Minnie
Henderson of Trenton, N.J.; and
Tarnetta Bass of Germantown, Pa.;
and three brothers, Malachi
Spellman of Elizabeth City, Ten
nyson SpeUman of Trenton and
Robert Spellman of Norfolk.

Thuraday in Greater Metropolitan
AME Zion Church by Dr. Jackaoo A.
Browne. Burial waa in Calvary
Cemetery with Hale Funeral Home
in charge. The family waa at the

PAYNE
CHARLOTTE ? Mr*. Frances
Cely Payne, wile of Richard S. Payne
of 2535 Country Club Lane, died
Thursday, March 3 in a Presbyterian
Hospital.
Born in Gas tools, she was the
daughter of Mamie Lou Ellison Cely
of Hendersonvile and the late John L.
Cely.
Following graduation from high
school in Easley, S.C., she attended
Ithaca College, Ithaca, N.Y. and was
also graduated from UNC-CH
She took the Little Jack Puppet
Show throughout N.C. to promote
dental hygiene among school
children, then taught English at
Perquimans County High School.
Mrs. Payne had made her home in
Charlotte since 1949. She was a
member of St. Martin's Episcopal
Church, srving as a Vestry member,
head of its Altar Guild and President
of the Parish Council.
She trained junior members of the
Altar Guild, was a church school
teacher, headed one of St. Martin's
annual bizarres and led its Girl Scout
program. She served as a delegate to
the Diocese Convention.
She ?u President of the Shamrock
Gardens Elementary School PTA,
and served as President of Charlotte
Guild Debutante Club. She was
immediate Past Chairman of the
Charlotte Council. N.C. Society of _
DAR and had been regent of Pied-?
moat Patriots Chapter NSDAR.
Mrs. Payne was a member of the
Board of Directors of Charlotte
Council of Girl Scouts, serving as
Secretary and Program Chairman.
She was chairman of its "Daisy"
opera performance by Charlotte
Opera Society for the benefit of Girl
Scouts and was a girl scout leader.
She was also a member of the ?4i
Holers at Carmel Country Club. ^
Funeral services were conducted
Saturday, led by the Rev. L. Bartine
Sherman, Rector, at St. Martin's
Episcopal Church. Interment
followed on Sunday in Cedarwood
Cemetery in Hertford.
In addition to her husband and
mother, Mrs. Payne is survived by

The Pirates came back in the last
quarter, scoring 32 points and setting
the team and the fans on fire. Mur
freesboro, only scoring 21 points in
the final period, could not stop the
momentum the Pirates used to tie the
game 84-84, with 3 seconds on the
clock.
Coston, taking the ball out, passed
to Jackson, who was attacked by
three Raiders. Jackson passed the
ball to another senior, George Long,
who sunk the ball with the final
seconds ticking off, and making the
final score 86-84, Perquimans.
Following the game, the
Perquimans Pirates accepted the
1983-84 District Championship title.
Perquimans will compete with
Clayton in the first round of the
Regional play-offs at Wilson-Fike
High School gym this Friday.

Jackson, 33.
