Perquimans County District Court,
the Honorable Judge J R. Parker
heard the following eases.
Sherman S. Overton, charged with
driving under the influence, pied
guilty. He was given a <0 day sen
tence, suspended for one year, a $100
fine plus the cost of court, was told
not to operate a motor vehicle In
North Carolina for twelve months. A
copy of his judgment was ordered to
be sent to the Pennsylvania
Department of Motor Vehicles;
Clifton Johnson pled guilty to
driving under the influence snd wss
given a sixty day sentence,
suspended for one year, a fine of $100
plus the cost of court, snd was told to
surrender his license to the Clerk of
Superior Court and not to operate a
motor vehicle in North Carolina until
properly licensed. Johnson was told
to attend drug and traffic school and
to pay the $100 tuition fee for the
school;
Clifford Pritchard Towe, Jr.,
charged with driving under the in
fluence, pled guilty and received a 90
day sentence, suspended for two
years, was given a $175 fine plus the
cost of court, was told to surrender
his license to the Clerk of Superior
Court, not to operate a motor vehicle
in North Carolina until properly
licensed to do so. An appeal was
noted;
Donald Jerome Barclift pled guilty
to driving under the influence and
was given a 60 day sentence,
suspended for one year, and a $100
fine plus the cost of court. Barclift
was told not to operate a motor
vehicle in North Carolina for 12
months. A copy of his judgment was
ordered to be sent to the Virginia
Department of Motor Vehicles;
Bernice T. White, charged with
driving under the influence, pled
guilty and received a six month
sentence, suspended for three years,
a fine of $350 plus the cost of court
and was told to surrender her license
to the Clerk of Superior Court and not
to operate a motor vechile in North
Carolina until the has a valid license,
a Second charge of diriving with
Improper muffler* vaa dismissed.
An appeal vaa noted;
Steven Michael Clouse pled guilty
to Improper paaaing and received a
$35 line plus the coat of court.
Nathan La* Tate. Jr., charged with
speeding, 7S mph in a 55 mph tone,
pled guilty and received a 90 day
sentence, suspended for one year, a
$35 fine plus the cost of court, was
told not to operate a motor vehicle in
North Carolina for thirty days. A
copy of his judgment was ordered to
be sent to the Maryland Department
of Motor Vehicles;
Cheryl Moore Downing pled guilty
to speeding, 63 mph in a 45 mph tone,
and was fined $30 phis the cost of
court;
Benjamin Wilson, Jr. pled guilty to
a stop sign violation and was told to
pay the cost of court by 5 p.m. on
April 22;
James Robert Boyce pled guilty to
driving under the influence and a
charge of driving with his chauffeur
license revoked was dismissed. He
was given a 60 day sentence,
suspended for one year, a $100 fine
plus the cost of court, was told to
surrender his operators license to the
Clerk of Superior Court and not to
operate a motor vehicle in North
Carolina until he had a valid license.
An appeal was noted;
Bob Benett Strickland, charged
with failure to secure load and an
inspection violation, pled guilty. The
charges were consolidated for
judgment and he was fined $10 plus
the cost of court;
Heidi Jean Shoneboon pled guilty
and received a $10 fine plus the cost
of court. Both were to be paid in full
by Wednesday, April 27;
Randy Glenn Winslow, charged
with speeding, 65 mph in a 55 mph
zone, pled guilty to exceeding the
safe speed and was fined the cost of
court;
Claude Michael Barrington pled
guilty to carrying a concealed
weapon and was given a 30 day
sentence suspended for one rear, a
990 One plus the cost of court to be
paid before 5 p.m. on May 2. The
weapon was to be returned to the
Thomaa Wade Stanton, II, charged
with driving under the influence, pled
guilty to reckkas driving after
drinking. He was given a SO day
sentence, suspended for one year, a
9100 fine, waa told to attend and
successfully complete alcohol and
traffic school and to pay the 9100
tuition of said school ;
Jimmle Richard Exum, Jr., pled
not guilty to speeding, M mph in a 55
mph tone, and was found guilty. He
was told to pay the cost of court ;
Donald Felton pled guilty to
speeding, 70 mph in a 55 mph tone,
and was given a 910 fine plus the cost
of court
Derrick Skinner was told to pay
reciprical support at the rate of 925
per week with the first payment on
April 22. 9100 was ordered to be paid
by May 15;
Jack White, pled not guilty to
possession for sale or the sale of
alcoholic beverage. He was found
guilty and given a minimum of 9 and
a maximum of 12 months sentence at
the State Department of Corrections,
suspended for three years with
supervised probation for three years.
He was also given a 9300 fine plus the
cost of court.
Money found was to be turned over
to the Hertford Police Department
for undercover work, full containers
were to be turned over to Albemarle
Hospital and partial containers were
to be turned over to the sheriff with
other things for distribution. His fine
and the cost of court sre to be paid
under the supervision of his
probation officer. An appeal was
noted;
Charles Forrest Goodwin pled not
guilty to speeding, 67 mph in a 55 mph
tone, and was found guilty to ex
ceeding the safe speed. He was told to
pay the cost of court;
Clinton Riddick, charged with
possession for sale or the sale of
alcoholic beverages, plod not guilty.
A notice for dlamiaaal was allowed.
In the May 4 session of Perquimans
County Dlatrlct Court, the honorable
Judge John T. Puffin presided and
heard the following eaaee:
DarreO Randolph Lester plod
guilty to driving without a valid
operators license and waa fined $75
plus the cost of court;
Armanda Trenchero Delduke,
charged with improper paasing, pled
guilty and was given a $35 fine plus
the coat of court;
Gerald Arthur Hostlllery, fried
guilty to speeding, 89 mpta in a 55 mph
zone, and received a $35 fine plua the
coat of court;
Danford L. Perry pled guilty to
driving without an operators license
and received a 30 day sentence
suspended for two years, a $75 fine
plua the coat of court, waa told not to
operate a motor vehicle until
licenaed to do so and to violate no
laws for twelve months;
Kenneth Perry pled guilty to
speeding, 68 mph in a 55 mph cone,
and was fined $35 plus the cost of
court;
Hattie Han-ell pled guilty to letting
her dog run at large and was given a
30 day sentence, suspended for two
years, a $25 fine plus the cost of court
and was told not to permit her dog to
run at large for two years;
Victor Whitehurst pled not guilty to
simple assault and battery. He was
found guilty and was given a 20 day
sentence. An order for arrest and a
security bond of $500 was issued for
John Askew;
James Purvis, charged with
driving under the influence and
driving without being licensed by the
Department of Motor Vehicles, pled
guilty. The charges were con
solidated for judgment and he
received a 90 day sentence,
suspended for two years, was given a
$150 fine plus the cost of court, was
told not to operate a motor vehicle in
North Carolina until licensed to do so,
to violate no laws for 12 months and

no law for twelve months and within
five days tp report to Albemarle
Mental Health lor treatment;
Billy Nixon pied not guilty to
permitting a dog to run at large. He
aubmitted a certified copy o t the
Town of Hertford ordinance which
waa allowed for evidence. His verdict
waa guilty. He waa given a 10 day
aentence, suspended for two years, a
fSS tine plus the coat of court and wis '
told not to permit Ms dog ott his 1
premises lor two years unless It is on
a leash;
Tommy Cox. charged with per
mitting a dog to run at Urge, pled not ( ^
guilty. His verdict was not guilty ;
W. Claude Brlnn, charged with
permitting a dog to run at large, pled
not guilty. His case was dismissed;

Dr. John Decatur Messick,
president emeritus of East Carolina
University, was saluted by the ECU
chapter of Phi Kappa Phi honor
society with a tribute and presen
tation of honorary membership at its
annual spring initiation ceremony on
campus.
Messick, now 85, and a Wilmington
resident, headed the Greenville
campus from 1947 to 1960. His ac
complishments and contributions
were highlighted in an address given
by Dr. Robert L. Holt, former ECU
vice president and dean, who first
joined the ECU administration in
1950.
Messick was given a standing
ovation by the gathering as he
stepped forward to receive tokens of
honorary membership.
Sarah LuAnn Jordan, a senior
special education major from

Perquimans County, was among the
28 junior students, 108 senior students
and three faculty and staff member ,,
intiates.
