, 'Yard sale-ing' ? a new kind of sport in Perquimans
By VAL SHORT
The growing popularity of coupon
clipping, saving itamps, and car
pooling are signs of our ahaky
economic times and abow a growing
interest in conserving money. Also
growing in popularity are yard aales
? which also may be a sign of the
times.
t Garage and yard sales make up a
Urge listing on the classified pages of
the newspapers, especially during
the spring and summer months. The
ads read something like
this.. ."Moving, everything must go"
or "Neighborhood garage sale ?
clothes, baby items, toys, ap
pliances."
You name it and it can be found at
a yard sale, especially one like the
yard sale sponsored by the Hertford
Grammar School PTA each spring
and fall.
According to Mra. Carolyn Rennie,
PTA preaident, over 20 families
participated in the ipring sale, which
was held Saturday on the grounds of
Hertford Grammar School.
Using trucks, vans, tables and
blankets as showcases, the wares
included such items as clothing,
tools, records, hats, toys, carpeting,
appliances, furniture and much
more.
Mrs. Rennie estimates ap
proximately 200 attended the sale
which was held from S a.m. to noon.
"We had a pretty good day," she
said, adding that the fall sale is
usually bigger.
She said the participants in the
?how came from as far away as
South Mills. Proceeds from the booth
rentals and sale of refreshments will
be used to help purchase a computer
for the library at Hertford Grammar,
according to Mrs. Rennie.
There are several reasons why so
many people are turning "trash into
cash," according to Paige Un
derwood, Perquimans Home
Economics Extension Agent.
"One person's junk is another
man's treasure" is the idea behind
"yard sale-ing," said Underwood.
"At yard sales people find things are
offered at prices they can afford,"
she commented.
Underwood said yard sales give
people an opportunity to get out of the
house. "The idea of browsing makes
people want to be a part of it," she

said.
For those selling items at yard
sales. Underwood said that changes
in taste and interest could be one
reason for the abundance of
castaway items. "Many of us find
that we have accumulated more
things we don't like and are over
stocked in things we don't need," she
said.
"With more careful planning in our
purchasing, we can probably
eliminate the problem of excess
items," she continued.
Whether you "yard sale" for sport,
pleasure or necessity, it is an ex
perience that appeals to the young
and old, the rich and poor. It gives
everyone the opportunity to trade
trash for cash or cash for treasures.
