' Local residents graduate from college Several area residents have recently been graduated from colleges and universities arround the state. They are listed below: East Carolina University Cheryl Anita Jones, the daughter of Mrs. Mary M. Jones, and the late William B. Jones, received a Bachelor of Science degree. She was also named to the Honor Roll. Currently, she is a member of the American Medical Records Association of North Carolina and was a member of the student Medical Record Association while attending ECU. Ms. Jones was also a member of the Preprofessional Health Alliance, Society of United Liberal Students and of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated where she held various offices. Mary Wood Hurdle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Elton Hurdle of Route 1. Hertford, graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Therapy. She maintained an overall average of 3.6 to 3.89 on a 4.0 scale while in the School of allied Health and Science. At the Physical Therapy Banquet the night before, Miss Hurdle was awarded special certificates in recognition of her written and oral presentation of her senior research project. Ms. Hurdle served as treasurer of her senior class and was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma honor society during her freshman year and to Phi Kappa Phi honor society in 1982. Beth Swindell, daughter of Mrs. Betty Swindell of Edenton and Marion Swindell of Hertford, was also graduated Magna Cum Laude Bear season to open The big news this week is that the North Carolina Resources Com mission will open a one week bear season from November 14 to 19. This season will be for Jones and Pamlico counties, but this is the closest season that is open to area hunters since our season was closed in this area. Perquimans Outdoors By There was talk of opening the season down around Stumpy Point but that's as far as it got. The bear hunting in this county is gone forever, so we have to take what we can get. Let's not ofrget that on May 27, the Perquimans Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will hold its second annual sponsors banquet. Again this year, the banquet will be held at Anglers Cover Restaurant. All interested readers can get more information from DU Chairman Martin Fleetwood or any committee member. The fishing in the area remains good. While the "S" Bridge remains slow, the fishing on the causway is pretty good with nice white perch and catfish taken with occasional bass and yellowbellies. Elsewhere in the river the fishing remains good with some nice white perch being taken. There are some really big catfish being taken out there too. Down at the beach last week the fishing off the piers picked up with good catches of spot and sea mullet being taken. The finshing in the surf wasn't as good. with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy.
