I , It* ? t f Navy called to rescue By JACK GROVE Have you ever been "up a tree" about something? A permanent i&sident at Holiday Island found Iftmself n just that predicament on a recent warm July night. The cast of characters in this story Include a Coast Guard Warrent Of ficer, Bobby Butler; his wife, Rose; tfte amily cat. Scooter; and a !$>liday Island Security Officer, Bill Hood. The setting: a very tall beech tree on the lot adjoining Butler's lot at 12:30 a.m. Scooter had been missing for three days when late one night the Butlers Iward faint plea for help. Upon investigating, they found Scooter "treed" on the lot next door. Butler wrestled his 16 foot ex "tension ladder through thick un derbrush to the base of the tree and 2?gan climbing in the beam of Rose's flashlight. . He soon found that his six foot plus JQrame and a 16' ladder will not reach * cat 30 feet up in a tree. Undaunted the Coast Guardsman continued climbing thru the branches with the sole thought of resce in mind. He reached Scooter's perch and the rescue was complete. Or was it? Butler, resting 30 feet in the air, legs spraddled across two branches, trying to hold and to comfort a thoroughly frightened cat looked down into the blackness wondering how to get down. The solution was so simple ? call security. Hood, just off a tour of duty at the gate, arrived with a 30' ladder and saved the day (night? ). Scooter is doing fine now, though since the incident has refused to set foot outdoors. Bobby, of course, now has both feet firmly on the ground and recovering nicely from the claw marks. Rose had ordered a 30' ladder from Montgomery Ward's. And Hood, a retired Navy man, continues his more prosaic duties with security (when he isn't telling people about how the Navy had to come to the rescue of the Coast Guard. ) iCathi Williams is Wayne ; Community graduate r Mr. and Mr*.
