Area obituaries WAV) ? "'?-Joeeph Warren Vui, M, of 405 N. Trmt Street, died Sunday evening In hi. home ? - "A native of Perquimans County he waa the aon of the late Thomai Grant Ward and Mr*. Mary Elizabeth Overman Ward. Hit education began in the old Boawell's Pork School and then moved to the public ichool In Wtnfall. In 1905 and 1900 he attended Southern Shorthand and Business University in Norfolk, Va. At the age of 20, he opened a General Merchandise Store in Winfall in the building that now houses the post office. In 1917, he married Myrtle Nowell. They had two children, Joseph Herman Ward who died in 1973, and Sara Nowell Ward Ward Bumbarger. Mrs. Ward died in 1947. . Mr. Ward was elected Register of Deeds for Perquimans County in ttt?, a position he held until his retirement in 1952. He was Vice-President of the Hertford Banking Company until it ^ime People's Bank and was a <Qrector of the Hertford Savings and lJMn Association for 45 years. -Be was a member of the Hertford Itytry Club, Woodmen of the World, aiid Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. After moving to Hertford in 1933, he at tended the Hertford Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class. In 1M* Mr. Ward was married to Grace Chappell who survives. Other survivors include s daughter, Mrs. Sara Ward Bumbarger of Hickory; six grandchildren and a great grandchild. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning st 11 in the chapel of Swindell Funeral Home with the Rev. George Wilmoe and Rev. Raymond Needham officiating. Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were ElUon Winslow, Walter Nowell, Joseph Nowell, Dillard Ward, Floyd Matthews Sr., and Calvin Lane. The family requests that donations be made to the Perquimans County Rescue Squad or to s charity of the donor's choice. WARREN Mrs. Anna Belle Shigley Warren, 90, of Route 1, Belvidere; died Tuesday, August, 9. A native of DeKalb county, alabama, she was the widow of William W. Warren and a member of the Wesleyan Church, Mentome, Ala. Surviving are one daughter, (with whom she made her home) Mrs. Rendal (Mary) Cosand of Rt. 1, Belvidere; two sons, Rev. Frank W. Warren of Topeka, Kansas and William R. Warren of Atlanta. Ga.; nine sisters, one brother, aeven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The body wai sent from Swindell Funeral Home for funeral services in the chapel of Burt-Whitmire Funeral Home In Valley Head, Ala., Friday, August 12, at 2 p.m. Burial followed in the Bankhead Cemetery in Mentome, Ala. PEEEY Wilson Randolph Perry, 85, a native of Perquimans County, died Friday, August 5, in Edenton. He was the son of the late Albert Henry and Emma Reid Perry and the husband of the late Mrs. Sarah Boone Perry. he was a member of Saunders Grove Baptist Church and served as a member of the Usher Board for 30 years. ( He is survived by a stepdaughter, Mrs. Tahlieu Perry of the home; a stepson, Mr. Aaron Boone of Philadelphia, Pa.; five step grandchildren and seven step-great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, August 9, at 2:30 p.m. at Saunders Grove Baptist Church, Hertford, by Rev. Curtis A. Proctor. Burial followed in Perry Cemetery. Stallings Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Arts Council awards local grant The N. C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural P^sources, has awarded more than *22 ,000 in grants supporting local afts activities across the state through its Grassroots Arts f^ogram. (Photo by Val Short) Senior Center sponsors papoose contest < The Perquimans County Senior Center will be sponsoring a Papoose (Baby) Contest during the Perquimans County Chamber of Commerce's Indian Summer Festival. For your child to be eligible, he/she must be birth to four years of age, a picture of the child, plus a $1 entry fee must be brought to the Senior Center, located at 300 Grubb Street in Hertfcfrd, between September 1-15. Judging will take place Friday, Sept. 16, 9-5 p.m. at the Senior Cen ter. The winner will be chosen by popular vote, so have your relatives, neighbors and friends stop by the Center on Sept. 16 to cast their vote for their favorite baby.
