And what about the 49 Volunteer
Rescue Squad members here in
Perquimans County? The squad has
served Perquimans County for 17
years. These folks deserve our
thanks.
The Perquimans County Rescue
Squad was formed in 1967 and began
with 75 members, of which 11 are still
active members.
The squad is funded by the county
which provides such needs as
operating expenses, supplies and
training.
They are on call 24 hours a day,
seven days a week, and make up
three squads, a day squad, and two
night squads.
The day squad is on call Monday
through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.,
and weekends on an every-other
week schedule. They boast an
average 11 minute response time.
Each member sings up to serve
certain days or nights during one of
these shifts.
According to Captain Annice
Peckham, there are always two, and
usually three persons on call, all the
time. All emergency calls are
received by the central dispatcher
(or the county, and then relayed to
the members on call by phone or
radio.
There is at least one EMT,
Emergency Medical Technician, and
usually two ambulance attendants.
The ambulance attendants had to
complete a 46 hour course and pass
its tests. They are capable of ad
ministering CPR, splinting, back
boarding, driving the ambulance,
hemorhage control and general first
aid.
In addition to the skills of an am
bulance attendant, an EMT is able to
take vital signs and administer
oxygen into passgeways. They must
attend a 109 hour course. Ambulance
attendants and EMT's are given
credit in the continuing education
program at COA for the courses they
take.
They both must be retested and
certified every two years. Currently
there are 31 EMT's and 18 ambulance
attendants.
The volunteers must also train for
a minimum of three hours per month.
The training is held at the Squad Hut,
usually during their regular monthly

meeting. They practice such things
as splinting, hemorhage control, etc.
At the present time, the squad has
three vehicles; one modular, and two
vans. These are equipped with
oxygen, backboards, splints, trauma
kits, blood pressure and suction kits,
two portable stretchers and one
regular stretcher. They can carry up
to three persons at once.
The County has recently received a
grant which will pay 25 percent of the
cost of a new ambulance. The new
ambulance will be in operation in late
September or early October.
There is a junior resuce squad now.
It has nine members and was created
to train young people and to develop
their interest and enable them to
become EMT's when they become of
age to join the squad.
These junior members must take a
minimum of 40 hours training and a
minimum of three hours per month.
They are capable of CPR, splin
ting, hemorhage control, and being a
"go-for."
Anyone interested in joining the
squad may contact Anice Peckham,
Milton Dail, Kay Boyce, John Beers,
H. B. Miller, Janet Turlington, Bobby
Winslow, or Darlene Perkins for an
application.
