Annual Festival of Skills slated for Oct. 15 With the arrival of crisp, cool, short days, thoughts drift to tall and . the fun of browsing, enjoying and r shopping at fairs, bazaars and craft festivals. The third annual "Festival of Skills," sponsored by the Perquimans County Extension Homemakers and Agricultural Extension Service, promises to be the biggest and best ever! Over 35 booths of craftsmen and artist will fill the Perquimans High School Gymnasium on Highway 17 Business in Hertford, N.C. on Saturday, October 15. Doors will open at 9 a.m. for 12 hours of sight seeing and shopping. Come early and stay for a bowl of homemade vegetable beef soup and other goodies. Plan to visist and welcome the many talented people (ram Perquimans, Currituck, Chowan, Bertie, Pasquotank, Gates County and Virginia who have prepared quality articles and large selections to please you. As we update the list of par ticipants, we welcome seventeen additional craftspeople who have entered the "Festival of Skills" since the last publicity. New comers to the IMS Festival will include Alvin liizelle, who will offer special paintings of landscapes and other pictures. Mixelle, a Snug Harbor resident, is very talented with brush and paint and we are indeed fortunate to have his work exhibited as a first in our area. The list of first timers grows as we welcome the follwing: Tasy Penner of Virginia Beach, with cross stitch, place mata, tabic runners and much more. Leaaie Benton of Belvtdere will diiplay her talent with fabric aa the cover* baaketa. lampshades and wreaths with a country touch. From Elizabeth City, Long Dun bar's ceramics will feature birds, ducks and deer; certain to please animal lovera who come to the festival. Fridgies, yarn dolls and animals will accompany Helen Strain of Edenton in her booth. Penny and Leslie Williams of Elizabeth City will bring art to the featival with hand painted country items and wildlife on saw bladea, old slate and light plates. Ada Harlow from Gates County will have a variety of articles in cluding candlewicked pillows. afghans and kitchen towels. Alio from Gate* County U Barbara Johnston with car amies featuring Ginger Jars, ash trajra. pitchers and bovia. A festival would not be complete without wood crafts. Dick Manns of Grandy and Joseph Sanders Jr. of Elizabeth City will have benches, mirrors, frames and toys to mention a tew of the items in the two booths. Troy Ellliott of Winf aU will exhibit, demonstrate and sell his ole timey dough trays and other wooden items, including biscuit cutters too pretty to use. Rena Copeland will travel from Windsor with quilted pillows and quilts. Jean Leggett will be on hand with English Smocking. Returning to the "Festival of Skills" will be ? sister team. Thelms Rogerson and Ethel Winslow, who quilt, candlewick sad make baskets aleni with {totted plaate and wreaths. Elvis Perry, oar "broom man," will be back with hearth brooms (some with straight handles and some with crooked handles) and whisk brooms. Groups of 4-H'ers, Extension Home makers and Senior Citizens will be OB hand to offer baked foods, canned foda and needlework. The three new members to be initiated are Brenda Terra nova, a gifted and talented teacher at Hert^ lord Grammar School; Elizabeth Foster, teacher and peer helper coordinator at Manteo High School; and Brenda Wlnbonne, second grade teacher at White Oak Elementary School in Edenton.
