MalMHUSn Monuments: ite WIWO^ Sunday School lesson The Motive Hyaea 11:1-4; !4:4-T lJohn?:M We began the autumn quarter of leaaona with a aeriea of lour lessons on the theme "God Reveals Him self." We looked at four waya in which God haa revealed Himself to mankind. We have now moved to a new unit theme for October, entitled "God Redeems His people." In the first lesson, which we studied laat week, we noted the problem: Sin. Sin caused it all. It began in' the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve rebelled against God's command, and has continued through the centuries since, even till today. But God is a loving and just God and He wants to unite mankind to Himself. Why would God want to do this? His motive is simple: God's love. It is simple to know it and to state it, but it is not simple to understand it. The human mind has limits, it is finite, and while it may know it and believe it, it will never fully un Church news Bay Branch AME Ziou Church Sunday School begins at 10:00. J, Respectfully, SWINDELL FUNERAL HOME HERTFMO, NX. 421-731 1 derstand tha greatness and the depth of the Love of God in this human life. Our lesson today takes a look at how God deals with people and nations in His continuing effort to redeem them unto Himself through a love relationship. God's Yearning Love Hoaea 11:1-4,1 Mr. Orrin Root, Standard Publishing Co., writing an in troduction to this lesson, had this to say, "Throw it away if it doesn't work. That seems to be the motto of this hasty age. Eggbeaters and automobiles, along with a thousand other items, are discarded when they could be repaired." "But who wants to bother with a broken thing? All humanity is broken, worthy of being discarded. Then why does God bother with us? He is capable of discarding things which don't work. Once He threw away nearly all the human race and washed the earth clean with a flood." Sometime in the future He will throw away those who are beyond repair, when He comes again and judges the people. Why doesn't He do it now? Simply because of His love. It follows His disobedient children through the years. Persistants it calls them to repentance and life. It pleads, but it does not compel. It's a yearning love. The verses in Hosea 11:1-8,4 records it through His prophet. It records how He loved His chosen people, Israel, and brought them out of Egyptian servitude and made a Holy Nation out of them. They were to be a Godly people among heathen nations. Yet they turned from Him and worshipped gods of Baal, but still God loved them and continued to strive to get them to be what He wanted them to be. He would take them by the hand and lead them in the paths of righteousness, if only they would walk along. But they would not. How foolish and ungrateful it is for people then, and now, to choose to ignore His wishes, instead of obeying and worshipping Him. (Read verse eight for the full picture ) God's Promising Love Hosea 14:4-7 The first three verses in this chapter record the prophet 'i call (or Israel to return to the Lord, and to ask His forgiveness snd to pledge to Him their praises. Then the fourth through the seventh verses record God's promises to Israel, if they would but repent of their wickedness. One Bible scholar that I know says that the Bible contains 30,000 promises from God. What a beautiful picutre we get from these verses. A powerful and loving Father wanting to give His beloved children peace and con tentment and loving care. I ? God's Giving Love 1 John4:S-> God is love. That is not all He is, of! course. He is also wisdom, majesty and power. He is goodness and grace, patience and long suffering. He is! also truth and justice. God's wrath is plain in His; revelation. When people become so' evil and rebellious God will act with justice, as He did in the day of Noah and also with the city of Sodom. Even as He gave Israel up for destruction, He promised restoration. God's love is both giving and forgiving. A devine love manifested in His supreme revelation, Jesus, His Son. A word from . . . . . . Mt. Sinai Do you ever get irritated? One step ahead ard two back? Just when you're about to "get it together'' "Mr. Advice'' comes along and says you're all wrong. The Lord allows irritation in our lives. While Satan believes he is tearing down God's work. The Lord uses the irritation as tests building strong, mature Christians. What touches your life is not nearly as important as how you respond to it. The pre scious pearl is the response of the oyster to constant irritation. Jesus is called the Pearl of Great Price. Read the Bible. How did Jesus react as a minority? How did Jesus react to disloyalty? How did Jesus react to false accusers? As Christians our goal should be to let others see Jesus in us. Our reaction to irritation should build faith and trust in our Lord. By our faith and trust others see Jesus and are drawn into the Kingdom of God. That makes us prescious pearls in God's sight. "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into various trials." (James 1:2) What book in the Bible is God's name not mentioned? Answer for last week Acts 1:26. Come by and see us anytime. Wednesday night prayer meeting, Bible study 7:30. Sunday School and worship service 10:00 and 11:00. We look forward to seeing you. George Wilmore, Pastor Mt. Sinai So.
