Green Thumb program
doubles county participants
The North Carolina Green Thumb
Program, which features em
ployment for people over the age of
55, haa over the past 18 months
doubled its number of participants in
Perquimans County. '
Seven workers now contribute
their talents to public agencies In the
county, with hopes for more positions
being available by the first of the
year. Workers are on the job 20-25
hours a week, being paid at a level
equal to or above the federal
minimum wage. i v
These jobs add over 27 thousand
dollars per year to the counties
economy. J.
But as important as providing a
steady income is, there, are other
aspects to the program that need to
be mentioned. Giving the older
worker, many who have retired only
to be unhappy, the chance to work
again, to use their abilities, is equally
important.
The value to the agencies, many
who have faced cutbacks and limited
budgets, is also extremely valuable.
Bill Tice, Principal r1at Hertford
Grammar School, says that his
workers, Marian Friersoo ? Library
Aide, Doris McKnight -r Cafeteria
Aide, Willie Brooks ? Grounds and
Safety Patrol and William Modlin ?
Safety Patrol, are contributing much
more than their 20 hoursper week.

off for sickness and a lifetime of
knowledge and experience are all
factors that make the workers so
valuable.
Patti White, Director of the
Perquimans County Senior Center,
echoes the thoughts of Mr. Tice. The
workers at the Senior Center,
William Modlin and Bud Reed ?
Grounds and Euncie Cale ?
Telephone Reassurance, go about
their jobs with little or no super
vision.
"They are very capable workers,
and do a very good job, I never worry
about their work," says White.
The Perquimans Union School in
Winfall is home to yet another Green
Thumber, Nellie Manley ? Office
and Library Aide.
Principal Gary Stubbins welcomed
the arrival of the Green Thumb
program at his school, and has even
requested additional workers.
Any public serving or non-profit
agency can apply for host agency
status. Non-profit agencies must
have a 501(c) 3 tax number.
Any person in Perquimans County
over the age of 55 can apply for a
Green Thumb position. There are
income requirements that mutt be
met and an application that must be
completed.
