RON E'S PLAZA 338-2000 Green Thumb program doubles county participants The North Carolina Green Thumb Program, which features em ployment for people over the age of 55, haa over the past 18 months doubled its number of participants in Perquimans County. ' Seven workers now contribute their talents to public agencies In the county, with hopes for more positions being available by the first of the year. Workers are on the job 20-25 hours a week, being paid at a level equal to or above the federal minimum wage. i v These jobs add over 27 thousand dollars per year to the counties economy. J. But as important as providing a steady income is, there, are other aspects to the program that need to be mentioned. Giving the older worker, many who have retired only to be unhappy, the chance to work again, to use their abilities, is equally important. The value to the agencies, many who have faced cutbacks and limited budgets, is also extremely valuable. Bill Tice, Principal r1at Hertford Grammar School, says that his workers, Marian Friersoo ? Library Aide, Doris McKnight -r Cafeteria Aide, Willie Brooks ? Grounds and Safety Patrol and William Modlin ? Safety Patrol, are contributing much more than their 20 hoursper week. Patti White, Director of the Perquimans County Senior Center, echoes the thoughts of Mr. Tice. The workers at the Senior Center, William Modlin and Bud Reed ? Grounds and Euncie Cale ? Telephone Reassurance, go about their jobs with little or no super vision. "They are very capable workers, and do a very good job, I never worry about their work," says White. The Perquimans Union School in Winfall is home to yet another Green Thumber, Nellie Manley ? Office and Library Aide. Principal Gary Stubbins welcomed the arrival of the Green Thumb program at his school, and has even requested additional workers. Any public serving or non-profit agency can apply for host agency status. Non-profit agencies must have a 501(c) 3 tax number. Any person in Perquimans County over the age of 55 can apply for a Green Thumb position. There are income requirements that mutt be met and an application that must be completed. Hertford Attorney John V. Mat thews, Jr. was elected President of the First District Judicial Bar Association on September 30. Elections were held during the groups annual meeting at the Port 'O Call Restaurant in Kill Devil Hills. Membership to the Bar Associatioi is limited to lawyers and fudges. The purpose of the organ exchange ideas and information, as well as to keep abreast of new changes in laws. The First District Judicial Bar Association is comprised of members in Perquimans, Chowan, Gates, Pasquotank, Camden, Currictuck and Dare Counties.
