God's Gracious Covenant
Exodus 11:5-6
Hebrews i.#-13
"Now therefore, if ye will obey My
voice indeed and keep My covenant,
then ye shall be a peculiar treasure
unto Me above all people; for all the
earth is Mine: and ye shall be unto
Me a kingdom of priests, and a holy
nation." (Exodus 19:5-6)
This is the conditional covenant
God made with the people of Israel,
descendants of Abraham. It con
tained God's promise to the people if
the people would live by the covenant
and obey God. The word "covenant"
is seldom spoken these days outside
of church.
Today we use the word "con
tract,"' stipulating an agreement
between two or more parties. When
we buy a home, an automobile or
lease an apartment, it is usually done
with a contract between the parties.
A marriage is a covenant between a
husband and wife.
Nearly every area of our life is
involved with covenants, some
written and some verbal. Simply
these are agreements made between
people providing what is required
and expected from each person. In
the context of today's lesson we look
at God's covenant with people.
God's Old Covenant
Exodus It: 54
At Mt. Sinai God gave His covenant
in such a way that no one would doubt
that it came from Him. The whole
mountain was trembling, wrapped in
fire and smoke. In a "voice of a
trumpet exceedingly loud" God
came down to the mountain and

Several years ago we dined at a

ordered a Baked flounder topped
with vegetables. It was truly
delicious and I have since duplicated
it for my husband. The vegetables
may be chopped prior to dinnertime
in order to speed preparation time.

Holon Huntor
spoke the ten commandments so that
all the people heard them.
It was a good covenant but still the
people could choose to accept it or
reject it. They rightly chose to accept
it, but later they would fail to keep it.
The covenant was provisional, it
began with an "if."
"If you will obey My voice indeed,
and keep My covenant," they would
be a kingdom people with God, their
King. A priest nation and a holy
nation. They were to be a "showcase
nation" so that all the heathen
nations could see that it is good to
obey God, that obedience brings
prosperity and happiness.
They were to be diffeerent from
other people. They were not to share
the greed, the ruthless disregard of
others, the love of self and pleasures
as typified in the heathen nations.
Holy. A people set aside and
dedicated to Jehovah God.
But, alas, Israel failed to keep the
covenant except for short periods of
time. God would now establish a new
and better covenant, it would include
all people.
God'i New Covenant
Hebrewi 8:6-13
The writer of these verses of
Scripture describes the difference
between the old and new covenant.
First, he speaks of a better covenant
and the need for a better covenant in
verses 6-7.
The old covenant was brought by
Moses and written on stone tablets.
The new covenant was brought by
Jesus, and while it was recorded in
the New Testament, it would be
written in the minds and hearts of
people. It would be before them
continually and surely they could not
forget.
However, the outstanding feature
of the new covenant was that the
people's sins would be taken away.
They were forgiven and forgotten.
The penalty for their sins would be
paid for through the shed blood of
Jesus, the Son of God.
No longer would the blood of
animal sacrifices be necessary to
atone for the sin of mankind. Verse 12
sets the tone for our lives under the
new covenant, "For I will be mer
ciful to their righteousness." We
serve a merciful, loving and
forgiving God.

A word from . . .
. . . Mt. Sinai
Has your home turned into a
motel? Are there four or five
people who come there and stay
the night ond leave in the morn
ing? In many cases that's the way
our families act. There is little or
no contact or communication with
each other. Father is in the den
with the TV, mother is in the
kitchen or laundry room, the
children are in their room, when
they are home. Day after day
passes, no one knows what the
other is doing or thinking. In a
few years you're living with a
house full of strangers.
That is not what fomily is
supposed to be. Mt. Sinai Baptist
Church is having a Family Enrich
ment weekend Nov. 4. 5, 6, 7:30
each evening and 1 1 :00 Sunday
morning.
Ron and Lynda Benson and their - '
family want to shore with us the
Biblical principles of family
relationships.
We want you to come. You can
learn how to avoid much of the
stress and tension that seriously
harms families.
Join our regular worship
Wednesday night 7:30, Sunday
morning 10:00 and 11:00. I
