SCHOOL Elizabeth City State University awarded Title III Grant Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins, Chancellor, announces that Elisabeth City State University has been awarded a $414,973 Title III grant (or the 1M3-S4 academic year. The grant, made possible under provisions of the U. S. Off flee of Education's Sepcial Needs Program, represents the first year's allocation for a program funded for five years. "Because of the Impact this grant will have on our present and long range plana, and the Indirect impact it will have on northeastern North Carolina, we certainly take this opportunity to commend James E. The Title III grant of ECSU funds program activities in the following areas: (1) computer and information sciences; (2) academic computer support system; (3) career development program; (4) enhan cement of administrative com puting; (5) strengthening fiscal management; and (6) Title III coordination. It also calls for the full application of Computer Assisted Instruction to all academic areas, so that students wilt attain essential computer literacy skills prior to completing their undergraduate studies. Initially, under direction of a Computer Center Manager and an Academic Computing Committee, 12 faculty members will be trained. Once trained, these will be used to help train the next group, as the Academic Computer Support System is expanded. According to Dr. Sohindar S. Sach dev, Chairman of the Mathematics Department, 80 students, mostly mathematics majors, are con centrating in computer science, while over 300 students are taking computer science courses. A Curriculum Developer and a Computer Technician will be hired immediately to work with ECSU administrators in purchasing and* installing 40 microcomputers and! necessary software; test the new!! system and make expanded can-, nections with TUCC: prepare a plan! for modificatin and/or renovation of' facilities that will house the com-! puter hardware; develop courses for* the new major; secure necessary.' reference books that will support" course development; and provide^ faculty and staff training.
