Week-end Destruction . i The Hertford Police Deaprtment has reported an act of vandalism that occured last weekend in Cedarwood Cemetery. A person or per sons entered the cemetary early Sunday morning and kicked over headstones, broke vases and strew flowers across the grounds. A $500.00 reward has been of fered by the Town of Hertford and the Hertford Police Deaprtment for the arrest and conviction of in dividual^) involved. Anyone having any information should contact the Hertford Police Department at 426 5587. All Information will be held in strict confidence. X. Harrell attends executive seminar Participating in a first for the top executive of North Carolina's public school systems, Superintendent Pat Harrell of Hertford, was selected to attend a seminar on "Situational Leadership" co-sponsored by In ternational Business Machine Cor poration. The seminar, held December 13-15 at IBM's Hercules Building in the Research Triangle Park, was also sponsored by the State Department of Public Instruction Leadership Institute for Principals. State Superintendent Craig Phillips said the seminar helped to expand the statewide emphasis on business/Industry partnerships in the schools. Using the Hershey-Blanchard model for' situational leadership, Tom Hurysz and other IBM Seminar leaders will share big-bnsiness management know-how with Superintendent Harrell and the 23 other schoql leaders from across the state chosen to participate in the limited enrollment program. Art Joye, seminar coordinator for the Principals' Institute, said the first aim of the special three-day training session is to sharpen the school administrator's skills in judging the capabilities and motivation of each employee in the school system management team. How much this employee knows about a particular assigned task determines the leadership style the superintendent decides to use to get the job done, he added. Service News WHITE Marine Cpl. John L. White, son of Johnnie and Addie White of Route 3, Hertford, recently participated in exercise "Valiant Usher 84-2." He is a member of Battalion Landing Team 3/3, 31st Marine Amphibious Unit, Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Approximately 1800 Marines and Sailors of the 31st Marine Am phibious Unit were Involved in the unilateral amphibious exercise that was conducted November 4-8, 1983, in the Lancelin Army Training Area of Western Australia. OLD Staff Sergeant William T. "Tommy" Old was recently selected to participate with the 436 Military Airlift Wing, Airlift Control Unit in the joint-Services exercise, BOLD EAGLE-84; at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. ?. >C Upon return to his assigned duty station, the 436 Security Squadron, Dover Atf Force Base, Dover, Delaware^ Sergeant Old was awarded the honor of being selected "Non-commission Officer of the Month." ' While participating in BOLb .( Area obituaries GODWIN Mrs. Maude Mathews Godwin, 84, of 101 W. Railroad Ave., Hertford, died Wednesday morning, December 14, in Unit B of Chowan Hospital. A native of Perquimans County she was the widow of Seldon C. Godwin and the daughter of the late Will and Annie Corbitt Mathews. She^ was a member of Hertford United Methodist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. John (Beuna Mae) Reilly of Houston, Texas, Mrs. W.D. (Eloise) Landing of Hertford and Mrs. Billy Ray (Judy) Phelps of Creswell; a son, Latham Godwin of Hertford; two .half-sisters, Mrs. nnie Mae Baker of Rt. 1, Belvidere and Mrs. Ida Perry of Williamston; a brother, Howard "Tim" Mathews of Hert ford; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Swindell Funeral Home by Rev. Irving Cook. Burial followed in Cedar Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Preston Morgan played "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden" during the service. Pallbearers were Donald Richard Matthews, Will Matthews, Whit Cartwright, Lloyd R. "Flutch" Dail, Howard Mathews Jr. and Donald Jordan. TRUEBLOOD David Riddick Trueblood, 86, of Winfall, died Thursday evening, December 15, in his home after a lengthy illness. A native of Perquimans County he was the son of the late William and Mattie Winslow Trueblood and the husband of Mrs. Vergie Bagley Trueblood. He was a former Mayor of Winfall and a retired mechanic for the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority. Continuing our tradition, refreshments will be served on Christmas Eve at both our Hertford Offices. For your convenience, our offices will be open all day from 9 AM to 6 PM on Friday, December 23, 1983. We will also be open on, Friday, December 30, 1983 from 9 AM to 6 PM. We will be closed on December 26, 1983 and Monday, January 2, 1984, which are legal bank ing holidays.
