COMMUNITY B ULLETIN Reception held for volunteers recently 1 The home-delivered meals volunteers were honored at a Christmas reception on December 20 . at the Senior Center In Hertford. R ; This program began in September -and delivers approximately eight .meals per day to the homebound elderly in Hertford. , The volunteers donate ap proximately one hour of their time twice a month to deliver the me all. James McGinnis, Program Representative with the Division of Aging from Raleigh, was on hand for the reception. The volunteers were treated to refreshments and were also awarlD certificates from the Governor's office for the outstanding Parents warned of disc battery dangers The small button or disc batteries used to power such items as com puter toys, games, calculators, hearing aids, watches and cameras should be kept away from small children, warn Albemarle Hospital ^ officials. * According to the Albemarle Hospital Emergency Department Comittee, the batteries, if swallowed, could cause damage to the gastro intestinal tract, such as perforation, obstruction or metal toxicity. The major ingredient in the small batteries is acqueous potassium hydroxide, the same ingredient used in some drain cleaners. "Adults need to be extremely carefu where they put these bat teries," said Sandra Hoffler, emergency room head nurse at Albemarle Hospital. "Some of the new electronic toys and games may have these batteries that could resemble candy to some children," she said. The committee, chaired by Dr. LeRoy C. Hand Jr., urges parents who are confronted with such an emergency to contact their doctor or the Albemarle Hospital emergency room immediately. Service news HARRELL Airman Carlton R. Harrell, son of Mary F. and William R. Harrell of Route 1, Hertford, has ben assigned to Chanute Air Force Base, 111., after completing Air Force basic training. During the six weeks at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic traiing earn credits toward an associate degree in applied science through the Community College of the Air Force. The airman will now receive specialized instruction in the fire protection field. He is a 1983 graduate of Elizabeth City State University. Ford Company gives 30-year gold pin NORFOLK, Va. ? Nine employees of Ford Motor Company's Norfolk Assembly Plant will celebrate milestone anniversaries with the company during December. In individual ceremonies, each will receive a 30-year gold pin from Plant / '? - Manager Joseph E. Bobnar and a message of appreciation from Philip Caldwell, company chairman. Being honored from Hertford is James W. Rountree of Route 4, who works in the Quality Control Department. SAUSAGE AND PEPPERS 1 pound sausage links 3 cups sliced green peppers 2 cups sliced onions 1 jar (15 1/2 ounces) Prego Spaghetti Sauce 1. in large skillet over high heat, brown sausage' on all sides. With fork, pierce sausage skin to re lease some juice*. Remove from pan; set aside. 2. In same skillet, cook peppers and onions until tender. Add sausage and spaghetti sauce. Cover; aim er, stirring occasionally, 45 minute* or until sausage is done. 3. Serve over fried po lenta, cornbread or pasta. Makes 4 servings. Job they are doing In the community. In addition to the generous work provided by the volunteers, they are able to receive tax deductions for their efforts. Door prizes for the event were donated by Servomation Corporation of Rocky Mount. Paper supplies were donated by Gregory's and Roses, both of Hertford. Three-year-old Cera Coatee welcomes her new lister, Maranda, to the world during a recent visit to Albemarle Hospital in Elisabeth City. Cara. along with her grand mother, aunt and uncle, recently took advantage of the new visitation policy for obstetrical patients in private rooms at Albemarle Hospital. With the new policy those patients may receive visitors 24 hours a day. Children under age 12 may also visit, but must be accompanied by an adult. Visiting hours for ob stetrical patients in semi private rooms will remain the same ? 8 a.m. to 10 Home health services expanded The Home Health Service through the District Health Department has expanded service to include Hospice Care. The Hospice Care assists patients and families by providing support and care to the terminally ill so that the best quality of life possible is attained. The program provides for care to enable the patient to remain at home. In order to make this service possible volunteers are needed from Pasquotank, Perquimans, Camden, Chowan, and Currituck Counties. A training course for volunteers will be held one night weekly from January 9, 1984 through March 5 from 7:00-9:30. The sessions will be held at the College of the Albemarle, (Building A), located near Albemarle Hospital, in Elizabeth City. All persons interested in becoming a volunteer and participating in the training program should contact Kay Whedbee or Nora McDougald at 338 2167.
