4-H Achievement Night set
Perquimans County will have a 4-H Achievement Night on
Thursday, February 23, at 7:00 p.m. in the ARPDC Building.
The purpose of the Achievement Night is to recognize 4-H Club
members, clubs and adult leaders for their outstanding work
oyer the past two years.
N.C. Rehabilitation Association to meet
The first 1904 North Carolina Rehabilitation Association
Chapter IV Meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 6, at the
Hobday Inn on Highway 70 in Goldsboro.
There will be a social hour from 5:15 until 6:30 p.m. Dinner
will follow with a business and program agenda following din
ner. The cost for this occasion is $7.25. All members and in
dividuals interested in helping improve the quality of life of
the disabled person are urged to attend.
Candidate to visit
Senator Robert "Bob" Jordan, candidate for Lt. Governor,
will visit Perquimans County on Thursday, March 1.
He will be in the Perquimans County Courthouse at 11:30
a.m. All citizens of Perquimans County are cordially invited to
come and meet Bob.
Quilters to meet
Perquimans Quilters will meet at the County Office Building
on Monday, February 27, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Visitors
and new members are welcome.
W.M. U. class slated

County W.M.U. Mission Study class will be Monday night
February 27, at 7:00 p.m. at Hertford Baptist Church. Rev
Henry Hayes will teach the book "We Spell Missions A-M-E-R
F-C-A."

Total management table involves dual measures

Since farmers in the flat lands of
North Carolina began fanning in the
late MOO'S, they have been concerned
with removing water to produce
crops. Practically every soil type on
the flat lower coastal plain is wet.
Water either ponds on top of the
soli or it lies just below the surface.
This water has to be managed during
wet and dry seasons.
Now some farmers are finding that
some of this drained off water can be
used for irrigation purposes. Ditches
that carry away water could be used
to convey water back to crops.
The term for this process is total
water table management. It involves
managing water to its maximum use.
Excess water will be drained off and
in times of drought water will be held
or pumped back to the field.
The water can be retained - by a
metal device around the end of a a
drainage culvert. This device has
slots where wooden boards may be
slipped in to block and thus raise the
water level in the ditch.
During rains or wet periods, the
water can be released. Underground
drain tile will work well as ditches. It
can be graded so that water will flow
into it as well as out. Low pressure
pumps or gravity flow can be used to
push water back up the plastic
drainage lines.
Many drain tile companies are
becoming interested in this concept.
Various soil types respond
differently to subsurface irrigation
or water management depending on
their ability to allow water to move
through them.
Water does not move as readily
through silty and clayey soils as it
does through sandy soils.

Secretary of Agriculture John R.
Block said today.

Additional loan collateral peanuts
from the 1984 crop will be sold by
VSDA's Commodity Credit
Corporation for export edible use at
no less than $425 per ton, Block said.
^Current law requires the national
support price for 1984 quota peanuts
be the 1983 quota support level,
adjusted for an increase in the
average cost of production, exluding
any rise in the land costs for 1983.
This increase cannot be more than
six percent.
However, Block said, USDA has
estimated 1983 peanut production
costs declined from those of 1982, so
no increase is necessary.
In a recent survey of customers who got refunds, we found 3 out
of 4 believed H&R Block got them bigger refunds than if they'd

Camden County are also trying it.
Farmers in Florida have used the
process for yeara.
Reaearch done at the Tidewater
Reaearch Station has indicated that
the quality of the water ditches could
be Improved when cropland water is
allowed to atand.
It's nitrogen content is lowered.
Also sediment is given more time to
settle out. Chemicals are given
longer to breakdown. Nursery areas
for shellfish may also be improved
because this irrigating method
allows for a slower release of
freshwater.
