AGRICULTURE County ' joins observance "The Perquimans Soil and Water Conservation Committee is now joining au other districts in North Carolina in observance of Soil and Water in '84" Chairman Floyd Mathews announced. In making the announcement, Mathews said the program in Perquimans County will include a number of special events, including a no-till meeting, an Environmental Field Day at Union School and a conservation tour in August. The state-wide observance was proclaimed by Governor Jim Hunt at the January convention of the N. C. Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts in Charlotte. The event will last throughout 1984. "A lot of people take their natural resources for granted," said Mathews. "Even here in North Carolina where we have had such a rich store of good land and water, forests and lakes, and other resources both for agriculture and for the enjoyment of everybody. At the Perquimans County Extension Peanut Production Meeting in February the winners of the 1983 Peanut Yield Contest were recognized. COURTHOUSE SQUARE HERTFORD The basics of agriculture By JOHN SLEDGE N. C. Farm Burea Federation There are slightly more than a billion acres of farmland in the United States. That sounds like a lot, but when you divide it by the population, it comes out to an average of four and one-half acres per person. Only two of those four and one-half acres are suitable for the production of food and fiber. And if most people attempted to grow their food and fiber needs on those two acres, they'd likely starve to death and have no clothes. About 98 percent of us have a farmer to tend our two acres and it's only through his efficiency in production that we end up getting more food and fiber from our two acres man we can use. What do we do with the rest? We try to sell it oveseas and that's beneficial to all of us in more ways than one. Exports keep a farmer's production up and his costs down and that gives us cheaper food. In addition, total farm exports make jobs for more than a million non-farm people in the United States. Your two acres are dwindling in size. Fifty years ago, you had about five acres for food and fiber. With ?? .11. S. farmers get even more efficient than they are now. The biggest concern should be the dwindling number of farmers and the dwindling profits from farming. Using today's figues, most farmers can get a better return on their money by putting it in the bank than they can get by using it to farm. That's something for all of us two acre asbentee farmers to worry about. I Ill M O li I IIII?IM??MW New grass control herbicides By W. R. JESTER, m County Extension Chairman Both Po&st (sethoxydim) and Fusilade (fluailfop) are regiitered for over-the-top control of certain annual and perennial grasses among selected ornamental plants. These herbicides are not currently intended for domestic use (homeowner), except by professional applicators. Packages smaller than oop gallon are not presently marketed. Grass species differ in sensitivity to Poast and Fusilade, which makes identification and rate selection quite important. There is a schedule for grass height versus herbicide rate which should be carefully followed. It is also imporant that crop oil concentrate (or optional surfactant with Fusilade) be used, with the restriction that drought-stressed weedy grass plants not be treated. Allow at least one hour between application of either herbicide before rainfall or irrigation. Do not mix and apply with other pesticides. Certain grasses are not controlled, for example, Poast does not control annual bluegrass; centipede grass if - tolerant to Poast, but tall fescue if - not. - ; Centipede grass is not tolerant to Fusialde, but fescue is somewhat tolerant. Suggested amounths of herbicide to treat 1000 sq. ft. areas are listed as approximate values in the table : Rate Desired Active Ingredient Per Acre Poast 0.25 Fusialde 0.25 Crop Oil concentrate ?yriKtyn\ Rate of Formulation Per Acre 21 oz. 8oz. 1 qt. 8oz.
