(Mark 10:45) Tbe time of the event covered in today's lesson is near the end of Jesus' ministry. Be and His disciples are on His final journey to Jerusalem ? and to His crucifixion. Time is now short and there remains so much to be Uught to His Apostles. The place is the srea of Perea, east of the Jordan River. He and His followers had attached themselves to a caravan of travelers on their way to Jerusalem, also, for the passover observer. After a brief stop involving the event of the "rich young ruler," they were again walking toward Jerusalem. Soon they would cross the Jordan River, and be in Judea. Just a bit earlier the Apostle had warned Jesus to stay away from Judea since there were some there who were determined to kill Him . Raising Lazarus from the dead had brought the wrath of the Sadducees down upon Him because they did not believe in life after death. The Apostles doubtless know of the Sadducees' decision and that Jesus was hastening toward certain death. Organist. Rev. J. H. London will preach on the subject, "The Quitter." Dear friends, Women often prove to be more creative financial thinkers than men, with a talent for detail and analysis. In a U. of Oklahoma investment experiment, 72% of women did better than the Dow Jones industripl aver age, while only 33% of the men did better. Perhaps husbands and wives should make join investment deci sions. Respectfully, SWINDELL FUNERAL HOME HilTTOM, NX. 421-7311 Moreover, He wa? taking them with Him. Verse 32 in our scripture states that the disciples were "amazed" and "afraid." They were afraid of what might happen to them. They were amazed, astonished that Jesus would walk head-long into this situation and not try to avoid the certain confrontation. Astonished means to "wonder without understanding." The Apostles, as yet, did not understand the principle of Jesus' establishing Good's Kingdom through the role of a "Suffering Servant." But they would shortly. Jesus Demonstrates The Way of the Servant Mark 10:32-34 The Apostles and all the disciples still thought that the "Messiah," which had been foretold by the propehts, would establish God's Kingdom by way of a military /politcal leadership. He would defeat the Roman power that they were living under and set them free. Even though Jesus had told them on many occasions that he just give His life for man's freedmon they refused to accept it. In these verses He tells them plainly again, and in detail even, to the extent of how He would be treated at the hands of His enemies. A military /politcal victory might give them freedom but by shedding His blood on the cross He would pay the debt for their sins and thus give them salvation. The Way of Service Denied Mark 10:35-41 These verses tell us a very human story involving James and John, two of Jesus' apostles. They were blood related to Jesus, it is believed, cousins, in fact, sons of Salome who was sister of Mary, Jesus' mother. They requested that when Jesus came into His glory that they be permittedto sit with Him, one on the right hand and one on the left. They were thinking in terms of a king on his throne, and they would be the second and third power next to Him. These were places of honor and influence. These were zealous young men. The Way Of Service Demanded Mark 10:42-45 Jesus now attempts to teach the Apostles about His Kingdoor. Contrary to the principle of a civfl government where power an authority is vested in those who hold office, the greatest people in God^s Kingdom would be those who were the greatest servants. This principle of greatness through serving others is violently opposed ty selfish human nature. It takes on ? Godly quality. Jesus would again, i^ just a few days hence, demonstrate greatness through service. ^ Easter pageant slated ! "Because I live, ye shall live also. This is the glorious Message of Easter." Thus begins Piney Grove Baptist Church's fifth annual outdoor presentation of "The Message of Easter." The story is the greatest ever told and the actors and technicians are not professional theater people, but rather are members of the Piney Grove Baptist Church near Williamston. Entering into its fifth season as a production, the drama will be presented Saturday and Sunday, April 7 and 8; Friday through Sunday, April 13 through 15; and Wednesday, April 18 through Easter Monday, April 23. Performances will be each evening. As always, there is no admission charge. The effort behind the drama, like the attendance, has grown from year to year. Having begun in 1980 with a cast of approximately 50 people, the 1984 version of the drama will feature a cast of approximately 130 with another 50 to 60 people working in technical areas.
