LOCAL NEWS Local Briefs # New x-ray equipment reduces radiation Albemarle Hospital's Radiology Department has recently installed new intensifying screens and has changed the type of X-ray film it uses, thus reducing the radiation exposure to the patients by SO percent. According to Bob Carson, director of radiology services at Albemarle Hospital, this technology has been available for some time, but drawbacks existed with respect to loss of detail. "Recent enhancements enable us to use a super speed X-ray film with no loss of detail" said Carson. In addition to reducing radiation exposure to patients, maintenance of the x-ray equipment should be less costly, said Carson, because the load placed , on the X-ray tube is also reduced by SO percent. Spring litter campaign scheduled RALEIGH ? The North Carolina Department of Transporation (NCDOT) has scheduled the spring fc Clean-Up Litter Campaign for April 8-14, 1984. NCDOT officials are urging all motorists to drive cautiously and be aware of extra pedestrians along the roadside who are participating in the clean up. State Transportation Secretary William R. Roberson Jr. noted, "The Clean-Up Litter Campaign continues ^ , to be an excellent opportunity to involve citizens and focus their attention on our roadside environment." r ? L 'Vj! Roberson added. "With the 400th celebration approaching, this is a god chance to combine our efforts in beautifying North Carolina's roadsides before increasing numbers of visitors come to our state for this important event." Since the inception of the Clean-Up Litter program in 1979, NCDOT, with the help of citizens across the state, has been responsible for removing 25,084 truckloads of litter from nearly 53,148 miles of the state's highways. The money will be allotted to Hertford, Gates, Bertie and Perquimans County. He stated that $700 is being turned over to the Hertford Lions Club to be used in Perquimans County. A committee of Hertford Lions is in the process of contacting the victims at Snug Harbor to determine their losses and the best way to assist them with funds available. Area Obituaries ?? MILLER Teresa Ann Hibner Miller, 28, of 1U-M Hemlock Street (Snug Harbor) died Wednesday evening in her home from injuries sustained when her home was destroyed in a tornado. A native of Portsmouth, Va. she was the daughter of William Kenneth Hibner, Sr! of Portsmouth, Va. and Mrs. Beulah Fryer Katrobos of Route 2, Edenton and a member of Woodland Heights Baptist Church of Georgetown, Chesapeake. Va. Besides her parents, survivors include a daughter, Miss Shannon Pearl Hibner Miller of the home; a son, Dennis Ray Miller Jr. of the home; and a brother, William K. Hibner, Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Swindell Funeral Home, Hertford, with Rev. John Stanley officiating. Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jule Fleetwood, Dave Barnes, Jimmy Godwin, Reggie Bisin, Timmy Kane, Doug Pickop, Louis Anderson and David Harrell. GRISWOULD Cassandra Lee Griswould, 18, of ' 322 Stokes Drive, died Sunday morning, March 25, in Chowan Hospital. A native and lifelong resident of Hertford, she was a 1083 graduate of Perquimans County High School. She was a student at Elizabeth City State University, majoring in computer science. She was the daughter of Mrs. Mattie Ruth White Griswould Mebane of the home. Besides her mother, she is survived by a stepfather, Madison E. Mebane of the home; three sisters, Nena Felton and Sera Jones, both of Hertford, and Geralyn Knight of Brooklyn, N. Y. ; four brothers, Petty Officer Menford Gnswould and Jeffery Butts, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Senior Airman Quin A. Griswould of West Germany, and Pfc. Joseph E. Griswould of Augusta, Ga.; and a grandmother, Mrs. Neppie Johnson of Winfall. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 1, at 2 p.m. in St. Paul A M. E. Zion Church, Hertford by the Rev. W. J. Taylor.
